People living in this northern region take care of their amazingly rich nature. In 1983, a regional museum was opened in Ulan-Ude, which is the only environmental and educational museum of nature throughout Siberia and the Far East.

The main mission of the Museum of Nature of Buryatia in the city of Ulan-Ude is to educate the population in terms of ecology.

General information about Buryatia

The republic occupies the southern part of Eastern Siberia. It is located along the eastern coast of Lake. Baikal also has an elongated shape in the direction from the northeast to the southwest. In the south it borders with Mongolia, and in the east and west, respectively, with the Chita and Irkutsk regions.

For comparison, it should be noted that the area of Buryatia (351 thousand sq. Km) is almost the same as that of Germany. The native inhabitants are Buryats, but the largest numbers are Russians.

It’s not just that it was in this corner of Siberia that the Museum of Nature of Buryatia was created (photo further in the article). One of the most beautiful regions of Eastern Siberia is a delightful land of steppes and mountains. The nature of these places is very diverse. The beauty of the magnificent Lake Baikal wonderfully combines with the snowy peaks of the majestic Sayan mountain ranges, with wide rivers and with the vast expanses of taiga forests.

Nature of Buryatia

It is also important to note that the territory of this republic accounts for the bulk (approximately 60%) of the shoreline of Lake Baikal - the largest freshwater lake on Earth with the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a unique water ecosystem with a special and peculiar nature management regime.

A little about some of the natural wonders of the region

In order to educate children and adults of patriotism and love for the motherland, as well as respect for the natural environment, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic held a competition "Seven Natural Wonders of Buryatia." During this event, everyone could vote for a favorite natural object. As a result, a wealth of information was collected about 621 natural sites of esthetic, ecological, historical, cultural and scientific value.

As a result, the inhabitants of the republic chose the most amazing natural wonders.

  1. Mount Barkhan-Uula, located in the Kurumkansky district.
  2. Mount Undar Baabay (territory of Zakamensky district).
  3. The gorge of the Alla River (territory of the Kurumkansky district).
  4. Lakes Slyudyanskie (Severobaikalsky district).
  5. Waterfall on the river. Shumilikha (Severobaikalsky district).
  6. Garginsky thermal springs (Kurumkansky district).
  7. Canyon on the river Jide (Sorgostyn Habsagay), located in Zakamensky district.

Finally

The museum’s peculiarity lies in the fact that the most valuable part of the collections is represented by natural samples collected in nature, and then undergoing certain processing and fixation for the purpose of long-term storage and further study.

It should be noted that an especially popular among visitors, in particular among children, is an interactive exhibition called "Journey into the world of water." The event is held in the hall, which is designed as an underwater vehicle "Mir". In the process of "immersion" to the most diverse depths of Lake Baikal, the youngest visitors learn the animal and plant life of the lake, "explore" the bottom of the reservoir and the outlets of numerous hydrothermal springs.
