The capital of Yemen is the city of Sana'a. It has been known since the first century. In the Middle Ages, trade routes from South Arabia to Mediterranean countries passed through the city. From the 7th to the 9th centuries, it was the residence of the Arab caliphs, and after that it became the capital of the Yafurids. Further, from the XI to the XV century, the current capital of Yemen was alternately under the rule of various Arabian states. Then, until 1628, the city was part of the Ottoman Empire, and then became the headquarters of the Zaidite imams. In 1918, Sana'a became the capital of the Kingdom of Yemen, and since 1962 - the state of the Republic of Yemen.

Of the sights here, the most noteworthy are: medieval baths, al-Jami al-Kebir mosque (the only one except Mecca has a Muslim shrine - a sacred stone), a citadel, a caravanserai and mansions with excellent gardens. There are also museums: the old university (known from the 1st century), national, military, arts and crafts. A very interesting place is the VIIth Century Great Mosque, which is located in the Old Town.

In past times, a caravan route passed through the state, which ensured its well-being.

The capital of Yemen is connected by road with the large port of Hodeida. The local currency is the rial, as well as US dollars. They accept European money here, but less willingly.
