In the context of ongoing urbanization, large cities are expanding more and more rapidly. People see for themselves more attractive life prospects precisely in megacities. The exception is not the capital of Ukraine - Kiev. The cityβs population is growing rapidly, threatening to cross over four million in the near future. Already, the daily population (the number of people permanently living in the city and coming from the suburbs to work and study) is 3.98 million people. In the future, this figure may be much larger.
National composition
Most of the city's inhabitants are Ukrainians. But the representation of Russians, Belarusians, Poles is great. In addition, Jews, Moldavians, Crimean Tatars, Greeks can be distinguished from national groups. Kiev, whose population is rather diverse in composition, for the most part considers Russian as an ethnic language. On the streets of the city is not so often heard Ukrainian speech, which is recognized as state. Most residents prefer to communicate in the language of Pushkin, which is understandable to people of all nationalities. According to official figures, the population of Kiev (2013) was 2.8 million people.
Religion
Historically, the main religion of the capital is Orthodoxy. There are many
historical places and temples, which are cultural monuments. It is known that Kiev, whose population was first baptized in Russia, was the center of Orthodoxy of the Eastern Slavs. Christianity in Ukraine is traditionally divided into two branches that compete with each other, which is strongly manifested in the capital. In addition, Catholicism is quite developed in the city, which is practiced by immigrants from the western regions and Poles.
Crimean Tatars brought Islam with them.
Development prospects
Most European countries have demographic problems. So, the population of Ukraine has been declining in the last decade. For the first time, growth in demographic indicators was recorded in 2010. In the twenty-first century, there is a positive trend in the capital. The population of Kiev (2013) increased by 30.7 thousand people. Scientists predict a significant increase in residents by 2025. So, in drawing up a plan for the development of the capital, experts laid in it an indicator of the population of 4 million people. Among the growth factors distinguish urban. That is, the city will grow at the expense of visitors who want to settle in the capital. Natural population growth, in spite of fertility promotion programs, remains unattainable for Kiev. Most of
families has no more than one child. Whereas for population growth, according to statistics, there should be two or three. Unfortunately, the standard of living does not stimulate families to bear children.
A few historical facts
The first historical information on the population of Kiev dates back to the 17th century. According to these documents, then ten thousand people lived in the city. In the process of natural growth and migration, this figure has increased one and a half times over two decades. I must say that Kiev, whose population has always been multinational, has grown rapidly. Due to its convenient geographical location, it has long been a center of crafts, and subsequently the center of cultural traditions of the country.
