How to knit a hollow elastic band: tips for beginners

When the craftswoman decides to knit a sweater, she is faced with the problem of designing cuffs and necks. A simple elastic band is easily stretched, and the edge is too flat, and knitting the double length of the element and folding it afterwards is not a good idea, because there is a hollow elastic band. A hollow elastic band is a part of a product that has double thickness. It consists of two layers of hosiery knitted together only along the perimeter (for direct knitting) or along the lower and upper edges (when knitting a hollow elastic band with knitting needles in a circle). A feature of this technique is that both canvases are knitted at the same time, but it is impossible to call the element an elastic, since it stretches exactly as much as the product connected by alternating rows of front and back loops.

Application

Hollow gum is used when knitting gates, cuffs, the bottom of the product, as well as belts, valves and other elements. If necessary, traditional rubber bands can be inserted inside such parts. In addition, using this technique, you can knit double mittens, hats and scarves. You can beautifully arrange the edge of the cap without a lapel by completing the first 2-4 rows with a hollow rubber band. In this case, the edge will be more voluminous and accurate.

Tools and materials

In order to knit a hollow elastic band, both straight type and circular, you need needles of a smaller size than for the main fabric. You will also need a marker for the beginning of the row (for circular) and yarn. Its consumption will be 2 times more than when knitting a simple fabric of the same size.

And yet, how to knit a hollow elastic band? Simple enough. First you need to dial the loop. You can choose any dialing method, as a rule, each master has his own, the most comfortable one. The number of loops should be two times more than with simple knitting.

The first row: remove the edge, then knit all the even ones with the front ones, and the odd ones - remove them without knitting, while throwing the thread in front of them, as when knitting the wrong loops. The last loop should always be the wrong side.

Second row: remove the hem, even loops to remove, as in the first row, and odd - knit with facial loops.

The first row is knitted as in the direct version, alternating between the front and the removed loops.

Since for knitting a hollow gum more loops are needed than for simple knitting, for the transition it is necessary to change the number of loops by half.
