20 kopecks of 1932: description, varieties, numismatic rarities

20 kopecks of 1932 is one of the most interesting Soviet coins. Despite the fact that the cost of their bulk is low, they are actively collected by numismatists. Of particular value among them are the so-called crossings and coins made of non-standard alloys for a series.

Start of release

In 1931, for the sake of saving precious silver, it was decided to mint coins of small denomination from nickel. 10, 15 and 20 kopecks of 1932 and subsequent years until the monetary reform of 1961 were issued from this metal.

Today, the price of a standard nickel twenty-cent coin, preserved in good condition, ranges from 60 to 300 rubles, depending on the degree of wear. At the same time, the cost of rare varieties that differ from the main line reaches 50 thousand rubles, and in special cases it is much higher.

20 kopecks of 1932: a new design and a bright future

Coins from this year in addition to the material received a new design. The author of the innovative artistic concept was Anton Fedorovich Vasyutinsky. A well-known artist and sculptor, he also worked at the royal mint in St. Petersburg. A.F. Vasyutinsky developed the design of most Soviet coins and medals of the 1920-1930s. He is the author of the famous sign of the TRP.

The standard coin of 20 kopecks in 1932 is a yellow nickel disk weighing 3.4 grams and a diameter of 21.8 millimeters. On the obverse is a classic image of the national emblem in the form of a wreath of ears tied with a ribbon. In the center is an exaggerated image of a globe with crossed sickle and hammer. The sun rises from the bottom of the wreath; a star is located above the converging ends of the ears. The inscription on the rim "Workers of all countries, unite!" left, but, unlike the coins of previous years, this abbreviation "USSR" is missing.

The reverse is decided in a completely new style. Instead of the traditional denomination with a large number and an inscription in the center of the coin, this one shows a worker with a hammer in his hand. He holds a shield on which the coin's denomination is marked - “20 kopecks”. At the top right is the year of manufacture - “1932”. All labels are shifted to the right. In a circular rim, instead of the abbreviation, is the full name of the state: "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics."

Coins - "junction"

20 kopecks of 1932 are interesting for their rare varieties. One of these is the famous “junction” - coins, where when stamping the stamp from the blank for 3 kopecks of 1926 was mistakenly used.

On the “classic” twenty-cent coin there is no abbreviation “USSR” on the obverse, but on the “crossroads” it appears in the same font and size as on 3 kopecks issued from 1926 to 1935. The confusion arose due to the similarity of coin sizes. Today these are collectible rarities, and their cost starts from 20 thousand rubles.

Marriage, custom blanks and other rarities

In total there are about five varieties of “non-standard” 20 kopecks in 1932. In addition to the “junction”, there are two more stamp options: on the first of the ears on the right there are two spines, on the second - one. On the reverse of coins, denominations are found in wider numbers. Among the numismatists, they received an interesting name - “sausage”, for the similarity of the shape of the “0” hole to the stick of the doctor's sausage.

Also rare copies are coins minted on non-standard blanks. At auctions you can find 20 kopecks of 1932 minted on a blank for a three-kopeck coin. There are 20 cents of the same year of manufacture, made on the basis of a quarter.

Even obvious marriage is in demand among numismatists - a coin of 20 kopecks with a double strike. Coins from cupronickel, which are rare in themselves, are characterized by "non-standard" with traces of sheet stigma.
