Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg was named after one of the oldest buildings in the city. In 1704, Peter I prepared his own drawings, according to which the construction began. So the Admiralty building appeared in the new city , which was already rebuilt for the first time ten years later. A tall Spitz was erected on the gate - two centuries later it became one of the most famous symbols of St. Petersburg.

Admiralteysky district is rich in sights and architectural monuments. Here once lived Dostoevsky, Pushkin, Gogol, Griboedov. Many legends are associated with the streets located in this part of St. Petersburg. So, there once lived a craftsman of German descent, engaged in the manufacture and sale of boot wax. Once he asked Pushkin to come up with a small poem for his production. The Russian poet did not refuse the entrepreneur and in just a few minutes composed a slogan that brought considerable profit to the German: " Darker than night, clearer than day. "

Admiralteyskaya Embankment

Among the streets of the Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg, this embankment is the oldest. After all, the emperor founded the shipyard almost simultaneously with the city. Then, of course, this part of the city could not be called a cultural center.

Before the Admiralty there was a lot of free space necessary for a possible defense. The canals around the building fell asleep only in 1874. Then the construction began. An embankment formed, which ran from Sennaya Square to Palace Passage. It received its modern name in 1880. In the Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg there are also the eponymous passage and avenue.

Ascension Avenue

The main components of the St. Petersburg trident are Gorokhovaya Street, Nevsky and Voznesensky Avenues. The latter ends at the Fontanka, where it passes to Izmailovsky. In April 1738, Anna Ioannovna issued a decree according to which one of the main thoroughfares of the city should be called Ascension Street. It was supposed to extend far beyond the Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg, but for unknown reasons it turned out to be much shorter than expected in the original project. By the way, Voznesenskaya street, which later became an avenue, is named after the temple located in house 34A.

In the early twenties, Ascension Avenue was renamed. He was named after the politician who died during the Civil War - Mayorov. The historical name was returned in 1991.

Pea street

This highway, located in the Admiralty district, is one of the oldest in the city. In the first half of the XVIII century, the street was called Middle Prospect . Until 1738, the Trunk ended at the Moika. It was later rebuilt more than once. Today it begins at Admiralteysky Prospekt and ends at Zagorodny. When exactly the street was named Gorokhova is unknown. There are several versions, but none of them are officially confirmed.

According to the first, Gorokhovaya Street was named after a German merchant who once lived here. His surname was Harrach . First Gorrakhova Street appeared, then its name was redone in the Russian manner. According to the second version, the Germans have nothing to do with it. Nikolai Gorokhov , a Russian merchant, lived in Petersburg in the 18th century. In honor of him, de was named street. However, this version is doubtful: this merchant lived far away, where the Big Sea is located today.

Glinka Street

A street named after the great Russian composer passes through Theater Square to Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue. It was founded in 1739. Its first name is Malaya Polkova . After 30 years, the second appeared - Nikolskaya. The street goes to the eponymous cathedral. In honor of this temple were also named Nikolskaya Square, Nikolsky Lane. The abundance of the same type of place names led to the fact that in the nineteenth century the city council decided to get rid of one of them. Several variants of the name were considered, ultimately the street was named in honor of Mikhail Glinka. In addition, it leads to the Mariinsky Theater, where the composer's works so often sound.

Moscow avenue

The length of this street is more than nine kilometers. The avenue extends from Sennaya Square to Victory Square. It was built at the end of the 18th century as a road leading to Tsarskoye Selo. In the seventies along it established milestones. Some of them have survived to this day. Even at the beginning of the XX century, St. Petersburg, of course, was less than today. It ended at the intersection of Roshchinskaya Street and Moscow Avenue. After the revolution, the city grew. In the early fifties, the southern part of the avenue was built up with buildings in the style of the so-called Stalinist empire.

Other streets of the Admiralteysky district: Vereyskaya, Vitebskaya, Drovyanaya, Sadovaya, Serpukhovskaya, Pochtamtskaya. Prospectuses - Voznesensky, Zagorodny, Izmailovsky, Riga and so on. This list is, of course, incomplete.
