The Belarusian city of Lida was founded almost 700 years ago by a Lithuanian prince named Gediminas. The city developed quite quickly and after 250 years had its own coat of arms and received the Magdeburg Law.
History and Attractions
During the existence of the city, Lida was twice seriously destroyed: during the Russo-Polish and Northern wars, but despite this, many sights have survived to this day.
Princely Castle is one of the most interesting local historical sites. Foundation time - XIV-XV centuries. Prince Gediminas began to build the castle in order to protect his city from the attacks of neighboring peoples. In 1700 and 1794 during the wars, the castle was significantly damaged. After a fire in 1891, when almost the entire city was burned out, people began to disassemble the ruins of the castle to restore their homes. But what was left of the once majestic and powerful fortification was saved from complete destruction and oblivion.
In 2000, restoration work began on the castle grounds. The basis was archaeological excavations and information from historical materials. By 2005, the fortress walls with towers, internal buildings and outbuildings were already restored here. From then until now, on the shore of the lake where the castle is located, there are knightly performances. To see them, not only residents of the country come, but also foreign guests.
