Lenin Embankment (Yalta) and its history
Lenin Embankment is one of the oldest streets in the city. Today, it is very difficult to imagine without palm trees, attractions and endless bars, cafes and elite restaurants.
Embankment (Yalta) is the center of the resort life of the entire Crimean South Coast. In the mid-19th century, it was interesting only to local fishermen. When Yalta began to gain popularity as a resort, it began to be actively landscaped. In particular, a wonderful promenade was designed by the sea.
Yalta, meanwhile, began to develop rapidly. The local embankment was strengthened and decorated with red granite and porphyrite. Increasingly, it was possible to meet aristocrats and famous cultural figures of the Russian Empire. The embankment was surrounded by beautiful wrought iron railings that imitated the side of the ship. The author of this project was engineer A. L. Bertier-Delagard.
In 1960, to protect against storms and shock of sea waves, the Yalta embankment was reinforced with an additional step.
Yalta, embankment: photos and description
The total length of the embankment in Yalta is one kilometer. This is a favorite place for walking tourists and vacationers. Great photos are obtained here, thanks to the beautiful design of the promenade and wonderful panoramas. Yesenin, Bunin, Nekrasov, Chekhov and Gorky were very fond of walking along this Yalta street. Today, the best city restaurants are located here.
On one side of the embankment is a hectic sea, on the other, a green “wall” of palm trees and other subtropical plants.
Yalta embankment is often found in cultural works: in books, films, on paintings. So, the most striking examples are the story of Anton Chekhov "A Lady with a Dog", as well as the film "Assa".
Sights of Yalta embankment
Embankment (Yalta) is a whole complex of tourist attractions. Among them are the following:
- Monument V.I. To Lenin;
- Roffe baths;
- the hotel building "Tavrida";
- lighthouse of the 19th century (still working);
- Chapel of the New Martyrs;
- concert hall "Jubilee"
- Isadora Duncan sycamore and others.
On the waterfront buildings there are many plaques in honor of many famous personalities. There are many interesting sculptural monuments. This, for example, is Shirvindt’s pipe, Zhvanetsky’s briefcase or Joseph Kobzon’s muse.
Roffe Baths
A lot of interesting sights can be offered to tourists by the city promenade. Yalta is not only the sea and mountains; dozens of architectural monuments have been preserved in the city.
Roffe baths were part of the hotel complex "France", built in 1897 by the merchant A. Roffe. Recently, the chic building has been restored. The main entrance to the baths is decorated with a chic Moorish-style marble portal. On the front facade of the building there is a phrase from the Koran: "Be blessed like water."
In the baths of Yalta, the intelligentsia and the aristocracy loved to spend their free time. So, Chekhov and Bunin, Gorky and Chaliapin basked in the local baths. Interestingly, in the Soviet years, a beautiful building was planned to be demolished. Roffe saved from the death of the pool ... Sofia Rotaru. It was she who defended the monument and attracted public attention to the incident.
At the beginning of 2000, the building was thoroughly restored. Today it can be visited at: Lenin Embankment, 31.
Monument to Lenin and plane Isadora
The monument to the leader of the world proletariat - V.I. Ulyanov - looks very exotic surrounded by palm trees and cedars. In addition, it is one of the most expensive monuments to Lenin in the world. The bronze statue stands on a monolithic red marble pedestal. The opening of this monument took place in 1954. The author of the project was the architect A. S. Fomin.
Isadora Duncan's plane tree is another famous sight of the Yalta embankment. This tree has a solid age of at least 170 years. According to legend, it was under this plane tree that the poet Sergei Yesenin and the American dancer Isadora Duncan met. However, there is no confirmation of this fact, alas.
