New Year is always troubles. But they are added even more if you are the parents of a small child. Constant holidays and costumed matinees force dads and mothers to show their imagination to the maximum to create different images. Today we will tell you how to make a pea costume with your own hands.
What you need for a pea costume
Let's imagine peas. This is such a green pod, in the middle of which there are large lime peas. The antennae sticks out from the top of the pod. Approximately such components should be present in our costume.
There are a lot of manufacturing options. The easiest way to create a pea costume for children is to find a suitable T-shirt and green pants and decorate them with decorative elements. Separately make a hat.
You can go the more difficult way, buy fabric at the store and sew a pea costume for the boy yourself. We will talk about this method further.
The main components of the future costume are a vest and a hat. If you have pants or shorts of a suitable shade - use them, if not, you can make a long vest, as shown in the photo below.
The main material required for work is fabric. For a suit, choose a loose flowing fabric. For a hat, fleece is ideal, and for a vest - knitwear or velor. Match the threads to match. To make peas, choose a material of a lighter shade - light green or yellow.
Build a vest pattern
Since the vest occupies a central role in the costume, it needs to be given maximum attention. The first step is to take the measurements from the child. The proposed pea costume with their own hands will have a size of 32, which corresponds to the age of the child 6-7 years.
To build a pattern, measure the following indicators in a child:
- Back length to waist level - 28 cm.
- The length of the desired vest is 50 cm.
- Shoulder length - 10 cm.
- Half of the neck circumference - 14 cm.
- Half chest girth - 32 cm.
- Half waist circumference - 30 cm.
- Armhole depth - standard 16.5 cm.
The beginning of the drawing is point A. From it, measure the length down to the waist (28 cm) and put a mark. From point A, draw down a distance equal to the total length of the vest (50 cm or more), draw a straight line. To the right of point A, you must put aside half the waist circumference plus 3 cm (33 cm). This will be point A1. Another line starting down from point A is the depth of the armhole (16.5 cm).
Divide the distance AA1 in half and draw the vertical axis. At the intersection of the depth of the armhole and the vertical axis, put the point G2.
Draw the armhole. To do this, calculate its width. Divide the half of the chest circumference by 4, add 1 cm: 32: 4 + 1 = 9 cm. From the point G2, measure 4.5 cm to the right and left. These will be the points G and G1. Up from G and G1 draw vertical lines. At the intersection, get points P and P1.
Draw a neckline neckline. To do this, at a distance of 5.2 cm from point A to the right, raise the line up 1.5 cm. In a semicircle, connect this point with A, and draw an oblique to P, as shown in the pattern.
The front neck is drawn in a slightly different way. Point A1 must be raised by 2 cm and from this obtained mark to the left and down measure 5.2 cm. Connect in a semicircle. Draw oblique to P1.
The bottom of the vest needs to be sharpened a little. Front and back level should be greater than on the sides.
Sew a vest
Bottom, armholes of sleeves, neckline grind. We sew the two parts obtained on the sides and shoulders. Pea costume for children is already half ready. On the side, it is advisable to insert a zipper or sew buttons, so that it is easier to put on.
A white or green turtleneck can be worn underneath. It remains only to decorate the middle of the vest with balls so that the pod looks like itself.
We create peas
Take a lighter fabric. Next, follow the instructions and photos.
- Cut out semicircular elements of approximately 10 cm from the fabric.
- Sew all the ends, leaving only the bottom. Walk along the perimeter with a needle and thread, slightly stitching.
- Turn out and fill the middle with synthetic winterizer or cotton wool.
- Tighten the thread. It turned out a ball.
- Now sew the balls vertically to the front of the vest.
This stage is simply necessary in order for a pea costume to be believable. Photos of such images are presented below.
Create a hat
Headgear is the central element of the whole image. A do-it-yourself pea costume will be made incomplete if left without a proper top. There are two ways in this matter: to make another pod from cardboard or to sew a fabric hat. Consider both options.
The suit of peas for the boy will be perfectly combined with such a hat, as shown in the figure below.
This “crown” should be approximately 40 cm in length. On the greater side, it is 20 cm high, and on the smaller side 12. Cut two crescents from cardboard. Paste them with green paper.
The entire structure should be attached to the main rim, which is worn on the head. It is very simple to do: measure the circumference of the head and cut out a strip of this size from cardboard. Glue it and get the base for the pod.
Fasten the green crescents from the larger side. For reliability, you can sew. Place the rim inside and connect the crescents on the smaller side. Put the peas in the middle. Secure them with glue or thread.
Create a cardboard or paper skirt on top. Make antennae out of soft wire, which can be bought at any hardware store.

We almost figured out how to make a pea costume. We offer the latest version of hats.
To make it, take a square of green felt. Fold the fabric four times.
One side must remain free, and the one on which two folds must be stitched. It should get a cap. Do not rush to unfold the material. First you need to form pointed edges, like leaves. The cuts should be deep - up to half the length. And to be more precise, you need to measure the distance from the top of the head to the forehead and transfer this number to the length of the cut.
Determine where the face will be, and bend nearby leaves, so as not to interfere. Lock them with a thread. Attach soft wire harnesses to the top of the cap.
