Its main feature is a rich history that began back in the 12th century. The first mention of the city is connected with the personality of Rostislav Mstislavich - it was he who founded the Rostislavl fortress on the conquered lands back in 1137, which later became the city of Roslavl.

At the beginning of the XIII century, this place became the residence of the prince and his retinue, it was from Roslavl that the Smolensk principality was governed.

For several centuries Roslavl passed from hand to hand, experienced many wars, civil strife, attacks of foreign invaders, only with the advent of Soviet power did the city begin to exist peacefully and develop before the war. Roslavl was by then a major transport hub, and so the Nazis stubbornly tried to break into the city, and they succeeded: for 784 days, Roslavl was in the occupation of the enemy, after which there was a triumphant liberation.
