Hill Zhirkovsky - Smolensk outback

Holm-Zhirkovsky - urban settlement of the Smolensk region of the Russian Federation. This settlement is located about three hundred kilometers west of the capital. The distance from Smolensk to Kholm-Zhirkovsky is 130 km.

The climate in the village is absolutely the same as in any other region of central Russia. Weather in Kholm-Zhirkovsky in summer is usually hot and arid. Winters are cold and snowy.

The village was founded a very long time ago. The first mention of him as a village dates back to 1708. In the old registers of settlements of the Russian Empire, he is marked as Zhirkov (by the name of a local merchant). The village received its current name after the revolution - in 1929. During the Second World War, fierce battles were fought in the vicinity of this settlement.

Kholm-Zhirkovsky received the status of urban settlement in 1971. In 2008, celebrations dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the foundation took place here. Currently, the village is the administrative center of Kholm-Zhirkovsky district.

The village of Kholm-Zhirkovsky is quite large. A lot of people live here (about 3305 people). The villagers have the opportunity to work on:

  • cheese factory;

  • bakery.

There is also a flax processing plant in the town. However, unfortunately, it is currently not functioning.

Also in the village there is a bust of Admiral Nakhimov. This famous person in the past is a native of the current Kholm-Zhirkovsky district. A bust of the admiral was created by sculptor N.V. Chaplin. Installed it in the village in 2007 near the building of the City Council.

Those who wish to honor the memory of soldiers who died on the fields of the Great Patriotic War can also visit the memorial complex to the partisans of the Vadinsky Territory located 30 km from Khol-Zhirkovsky.

  • P. M. Mikhailov - pilot, Hero of the USSR. The last few years of his life, he lived in the village. In honor of him, a school and a street are named in Kholm-Zhirkovsky.

  • D. T. Sorokin - participant of the Second World War, holder of the Order of Glory. One of the streets is also named in honor of this brave man in the village.

  • E. I. Rodenkova - Honored Doctor of the RSFSR.

As already mentioned, at the moment the village is the administrative center of the whole district. Previously, these lands belonged to the princes Uvarov, who owned a total of 52 villages. Today, the main sector of the economy in the region is not agriculture, but industry. In total, 1 urban settlement (actually Kholm-Zhirkovsky itself), as well as 179 small settlements, are registered on its territory.
