Travel for an ancient person was literally any walk. Our ancestors were encouraged to wander several reasons: the desire to explore new territories, more profitable for housing, and, of course, curiosity, the thirst for knowledge of the world.
Subsequently, when money appeared and people were divided into different classes, categories formed that had to travel constantly. The history of tourism development at the initial stage of its formation was distinguished by the following unique features:
- Trade development. It was thanks to her that people satisfied their desire to know the world. For merchants, taverns and taverns were built, one might say the first hotels. The service was not up to par. In addition, such establishments had a reputation for brothel.
- The development of various religions has contributed to travel in different eras, but especially in the Middle Ages. Thousands of pilgrims flocked to other countries to see the shrines. Hotels were created for them, they were fed, they were told and shown holy places. In general, they did everything that is used today to serve tourists.
- The development of art and culture. The history of tourism totaled several categories of tourists who
they wanted to get acquainted with the sights and customs of another country, or they studied a different language, received education abroad.
There were people who traveled in order to improve their health, find a country with a more favorable climate for them.
The whole history of tourism is divided into 4 main stages:
- From the birth of civilization to 1841 - the initial stage.
- 1841 - 1914 - The stage of the emergence of organized tourism.
- 1914 - 1945 - The formation of the tourism industry.
- 1945 to our time - the globalization of tourism.

The popularity of water transport reached its peak in the ancient period. Already in those days, ships could travel long distances. So, new states began to be founded on the seashore.
In the 18-19 centuries, stagecoach became popular. But this vehicle had many drawbacks. It was cramped, narrow, could not accommodate a large number of people.
In the Enlightenment, the history of tourism began to include privileged classes, which, as a rule, traveled abroad to get an education. Without this, she could not start her career.
The increase in the amount of free time also contributed to the development of tourism.
Modern stage
Today, people travel mainly to relax, to change their environment. The tourism industry is currently moving forward by leaps and bounds. New attractions are being created, hotels are being built. As in the past, not everyone can afford travel.
The history of tourism has entered a new stage. Today, some countries live off travelers. This is almost their main source of income. For example, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Egypt.
