Comparing knitting techniques with crochet techniques, many craftswomen note the obvious advantage of the latter. Crochet ownership simplifies many fairly complex tasks: knitting hats, mittens, children's clothing, toys, and even home decoration.
Poncho - clothes for all time
According to historical data, the so-called clothing of the Indian tribes of South America. This wardrobe item quickly became very popular and fell in love with many people around the world. Today, the fashion for traditional types of poncho has passed a little, but its latest modifications have won general recognition.
In order to crochet a poncho, patterns and descriptions are desirable, but not necessary. This product allows you to use completely different yarn and knitting techniques. The choice of material and pattern depends on the purpose of the clothing: decorative or warm.
Also, the size of the product will affect the amount of yarn. Crocheting a baby ponch for a girl will require significantly less yarn than an adult long product. When knitting warm patterns, it should be taken into account that yarn with a thick thread has a very small footage. Therefore, it is worth focusing not on the weight of the purchased material, but on the total length of the threads in all skeins.
The most common types of poncho
All existing types can conditionally be divided into two types:
- Solid warm products.
- Openwork decorative capes.
The first should be knitted from yarn containing at least 30% natural fibers of wool, angora or mohair (optimally 50%). Of course, you can use acrylic, but it will not warm, even if the canvas comes out dense and without holes. Rather, artificial fibers will cause the poncho to be either too hot or too cold.
Openwork poncho for girls, crocheted, will hold its shape and be worn for a long time, if you use cotton, linen, polyamide or viscose.
Round knitting
The classic version of knitting poncho - round. They start knitting from the neck, the dialed chain of air loops is closed in a ring and two loops are marked with colored thread at an equal distance from each other. Next, knit circular rows, adding loops at these two points.
The general principle of adding is three loops from one loop of the base. This forms a right angle (90 degrees), more precisely, two right angles. Successive expansion will allow you to get a canvas of a specific shape. It meets the characteristics of human anatomy as best as possible and avoids the formation of too wide a canvas.
For warming, such a poncho can be equipped with a neck, as shown in the photo.
The possibility of using different colors and textures of yarn is an undoubted advantage of such a crocheted poncho. Schemes and descriptions of other options are presented below.
Two rectangle model
Sewing two rectangular canvases is a fairly common method for knitting wraps. This is a very simple way, crocheting a poncho (patterns of suitable ornaments are shown in the photo) allows you to use a large number of patterns.
To make a poncho using this method, you should knit two identical stripes with the selected pattern and then stitch them as shown in the photo. The shape of such a product is fully consistent with the form described in the previous paragraph. It can be decorated around the edge with a strapping or tassels, and for heat, sew a separately knitted collar.
Rectangular poncho
There is another way to create a crochet poncho canvas. The schemes and description of the pattern or individual fragments can be absolutely any, although it is better to dwell on ornaments with a moderate size of the holes. A sagging canvas may obscure the pattern, and it will appear that the clothes are tied inaccurately.
To make a rectangular model, you need to connect a rectangle of the required size with the hole-neck. For convenience, an opening-cut (“boat”) or square hole is left as the neck. When using square fragments, a poncho openwork crochet is convenient to knit using full squares and their halves, triangles. The diagram below shows how to tie a half square motif.

The disadvantage of this model is the fairly wide edges of the product. Each part has the shape of a rectangle, and not a beveled trapezoid, as in the previous paragraphs. This feature may cause some inconvenience.
Short Poncho: Drape and Cape
The modern modification of the classic poncho is a short drape. It can be knitted from warm wool yarn, have fur, fringe and pompons as decor. Pelerines are also knitted with the use of openwork patterns and thin threads. They are decorated with beads, rhinestones or knitted flowers. Quite often, knitted drape is used for wedding attire or on summer days to protect against solar ultraviolet radiation.
Crocheting a short poncho (the patterns and description are very important here) is carried out round-the-round, by return rows or by compiling individual fragments. The photo above shows the options for openwork decorative poncho. Like other types of poncho, the drape can be circular or in the form of an open canvas with a fastener or ties.
Crocheting a poncho for beginners should not be considered an overwhelming task. The correct selection of models and yarn, as well as careful calculations of loops and rows will help create an excellent functional wardrobe item.
