The capital of Suriname is Paramaribo

In the north of the "blazing" mainland - South America, washed by the waters of the Atlantic, there is a small state of Suriname. A country where barren sands and dry savannahs are adjacent to equatorial rainforests.

Capital of Suriname

The indigenous tribes of these lands were the Caribbean and Arawak. From the seventeenth century, sugar cane and coffee plantations began to be planted here, on which the then enslavers, the Dutch, used the labor of African slaves. In the sixties of the nineteenth century, slavery was abolished, and immigrants from Indonesia and India began to arrive in the colony. And in 1975, the country became independent.

The main city and the largest port of the state is the capital of Paramaribo, built on the Suriname River of the same name, with a population of more than 200 thousand people.

It was founded by French colonists in the middle of the seventeenth century on the site of a small Indian village, making it the capital of the colony. However, a dozen years later, the capital of Suriname was captured by the Dutch. In general, a lot of things in Paramaribo are connected with the influence of the Dutch culture - houses, architectural structures, canals.

The capital of Suriname is a kind of historical monument dedicated to the country's struggle for independence. It constantly collapsed, but each time, though slowly, it was restored. Since the colonial period, only a few old churches and buildings, which are under the protection of UNESCO, have been preserved in it.

In the history of Suriname there are many striking examples of the cruelty of slaveholders and colonialists, from which almost all the peoples of South America suffered. The initial period of independence of the country was also marked by the flourishing of drug trafficking and corruption of the government, which does not pay any attention to its development.

Capital of Suriname

The capital of Suriname is the main transport hub and the center of commerce and industry. Everything that is rich in the country is exported through this port: bauxite and aluminum, sugarcane and wood, citrus fruits and rice.

The capital of Suriname is a very green city. Paramaribo is literally completely planted with vegetation, including evergreen trees. And in the surrounding dense equatorial forests you can even find cougars, monkeys, jaguars, tapirs.

Paramaribo

The name Paramaribo is translated from the language of the Tupi Guarani Indian tribe as "city of great water." Today, not only the descendants of immigrants who came here at the end of the nineteenth century live here, but also Creoles, Indians, Indonesians, Europeans and Indians.

The historical center of Paramaribo combines the traditions of many cultures, which is why mosques, a Roman Catholic temple and synagogues peacefully coexist here.

The peoples of South America

Since the capital of Suriname is not very rich in historical attractions, tourists are attracted by various extreme attractions and various water sports, for which there are great opportunities for practicing. For example, the route organized from Paramaribo up the Suriname river flow to the city of Mullobi and the reservoir, in the vicinity of which there is a beautiful Brownsberg National Park, with Leo and Irene waterfalls, is very popular.

This distant country is familiar to the Russian citizen from Aguzarova’s song about “the city of morning dawn” - the capital of Suriname.
