In the northern part of the Trans-Baikal Territory there is the Kalarsky district with an administrative center in the village of Chara. Here, high ridges alternate with deep intermountain pits. Urbanization, Population and Economics
Only 8160 people live in the district (as of the beginning of this year). About 49% of all residents live in urban conditions, mainly in the urban settlement of Novaya Chara. Throughout the district there are only 83 high-rise buildings, most of them at the Kuanda railway station - 47.
Earlier, the basis of the region’s economy was reindeer husbandry. Animals provided local people with food and food. But by 2003, this type of animal husbandry came to almost complete decline. Today, the main industry is mining, there are woodworking enterprises and leshozes.

Novocharovskoe
The urban settlement with the administrative center in the urban-type settlement Novaya Chara totals 3973 people. The boundaries of the settlement were determined only in 2004. The structure of the settlement includes the village of Udokan (108 people). The village was established in 1961 as a base for specialists to stay for expeditions for exploration and development of the Udokan ridge (copper deposit). By the way, by 1976 a town-planning plan had already been developed, but the construction of the town had not yet begun.
Along the Nirungnakan River in the settlement area there is a natural monument - spruce-chosenia grove. Here the trees reach a height of 30 meters. And just 10 kilometers away are Chara Sands.
12 km from the village of Novye Chary is located the hydrogen sulfide spring Luktur. The area around it is landscaped and is privately owned.
Ikabyinsky and Chapo-Ologsky
Ikabyinskoye is a village of the Ikadya railway station, where 426 people live. The name of the settlement went from the Bolshaya Ikabya river. The station is located on the 175th kilometer of BAM.
In the neighboring village of Chapo-Olog, 139 people live.
Kuadinsky
It is a rural settlement, which includes the village of Nelyat with 74 inhabitants. 1543 people live in the village of Kuanda railway station. The village is also called "The Small Capital of BAM". It is located at 1,561 kilometers. The settlement was founded only in 1981, when a railway line was laid here, on the left bank of the Kuanda River.
Charskoe
There are 216 people in the village and it is located in the Verkhnecharskaya depression, on the left bank of the Chara River. Chara Airport is located within the city (2 km from the very center of the village to the northeast). All flights are operated by Angara. Flights are carried out exclusively during daylight hours.
The village is attractive for tourists, as 9 kilometers from it there is a unique natural monument - Char Sands. This is a unique desert, measuring 10 by 5 kilometers, in the river valley of the Kalarsky region of Chara, Upper and Middle Sakukan. Here, all vegetation and relief are completely different from the taiga landscape.
The settlement includes the village of Kyust-Kemda with a total population of 1903 people.
The uniqueness of the region
The Kalarsky district of the Transbaikal Territory is interesting for an ordinary traveler and athlete. The total occupied area is 56.8 thousand square kilometers. It is here that the highest point of Transbaikalia is 3073 meters, and the highest point of BAM is 1316.93 meters. Here are the three highest ridges - Udokansky, Kodarsky and Kalarsky; the deepest lake - Nichatka - and the largest river of the region - Kalar, in whose honor the region is named.
Climbers are attracted by the highest point of the Kodar ridge, the top of which is classified as complexity category 6A, and the passes are classified as complexity grade 3A. Water routes in local rivers are classified as complexity up to grade 5.
There are 15 extinct volcanoes on the Kalarsky ridge, whose activity ended 200 years ago. Almost all of them have different colors, from yellow to gray. There is even a lake in the crater of Aku.
