It was created in 1923 at the initiative of the Russian doctor I. Kostemerevsky. He dreamed of opening a museum and for this purpose in 1891 bequeathed a significant part of his personal savings. But during the Civil War, almost all collections were lost. The restoration of the museum began only in 1923. Some of the exhibits were transferred from museums in Russia and Georgia.
