Valaam is an archipelago of more than 50 islands separated by straits. The marvelous harsh nature is conducive to prayer and spiritual quest.
According to legend, the first Christian community was founded by the Apostle Andrew the First-Called.
Dramatic events and rebirth
The history of the Valaam Transfiguration Monastery can be traced back to the 14th century, although, according to legend, it has existed since the 10th century.
It has repeatedly collapsed in hostilities with Sweden. In the 16th century 34 monks were killed here who refused to change their faith. They were later venerated as saints.
The monastery was rebuilt under Peter the Great, and then again experienced dramatic events in 1940.
Who is coming to Valaam?
Curious tourists from all over the world come to the island for excursions, volunteers involved in the restoration of the monastery, pilgrims who wish to pray at the relics of St. Sergius and Herman of Valaam, St. Antipius, at other shrines, to listen to the wondrous chant.
The island attracts history buffs, scientists, students.
Where to stay on the island for a few days?
To accommodate guests, there are three hotels in Valaam.
In a fire in 2016, the monastery lost two at once: "Attic" and "Winter", located in the same building.
Today, tourists and pilgrims can be accommodated in the following hotels of Valaam :
- "Igumen";
- "Slavic";
- on the boat.
Igumenskaya is located not far from the Transfiguration Cathedral, in the monastery building, where cells have been converted to rooms. The 19 double rooms and one single hotel on Valaam can accommodate 39 people. Conveniences are provided in three sanitary blocks.
Since the summer of 2016 you can settle on the ship "Admiral Kuznetsov", which constantly stands at the pier.
New comfortable hotel
In 2011, another hotel was opened in Valaam - Slavyanskaya. It was reconstructed after a fire, formerly called "Summer". Located on the territory of the central estate.
In the middle of the building is the church of Saints Cyril and Methodius with a small dome with a cross that rises above the house, worship services are regularly held there.
This Valaam hotel has 25 double rooms with modern amenities.
