Russian Stonehenge: Arkaim (Chelyabinsk Region)

There are plenty of objects in the world that almost every modern person would like to visit: the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, Egyptian pyramids, Machu Picchu, the Grand Canyon in the USA, the Statue of Liberty and many others. As a rule, in such places from tourists there is no end at any time of the year. But there are also such corners as, for example, Arkaim (Chelyabinsk region) or Eni-Kale fortress in Kerch, which are known only to a narrow circle of curious travelers.

Section 1. Arkaim (Chelyabinsk region). General description of the object

In general, a fortified settlement of the same name was once located on this territory. Since all this happened approximately at the turn of the 3rd — 2nd millennium BC. e., that is, in the Middle Bronze Age, modern scientists attributed this object to the so-called Country of cities. Its location was not chosen by chance: an elevated cape formed at the confluence of two full-flowing rivers - Utyaganka and Bolshaya Karaganka. Now Arkaim on the map of the Chelyabinsk region can be found if you trace the eight-kilometer route from the village. Amursky (Berdinsky district) or two-kilometer, but strictly to the southeast, from the village. Alexandrovsky, which is located in the Kizilsky district. This settlement is considered both a natural landscape and a historical and architectural reserve. A distinctive feature of the monument is the almost unique preservation of all defensive structures, the integrity of the landscape, as well as the presence of synchronous burial grounds.

Section 2. Arkaim (Chelyabinsk region). Opening stages

It turns out that this historical monument was opened not once, but three at once. For the first time, in 1957, it was discovered and mapped by the military. After some time, civilian cartographers noticed Arkaim from the air, but they decided that this strange object was classified, so it never got on the cards.

Another 18 years have passed. In the summer of 1987, schoolchildren from the local archaeological circle went to this territory. Their task was not to search for this monument at all, the guys were instructed to examine the territory with the aim of further building a special irrigation system necessary for establishing water supply in the agricultural areas of the region. They did not attach particular importance to this mission. However, during the work in the steppe zone , the remains of a settlement under the name Arkaim (Chelyabinsk region) were discovered. In general, one cannot fail to note the fact that, if not for the discoveries of young archaeologists, the area would simply have been flooded. The monument was defended.

  • The object got its name, not quite familiar for the Russian language, thanks to the name of the mountain, towering over this area. The peak is located at a distance of 4 km from the historical monument, and the toponym “arkaim” itself came from the Turkic language. It can be translated into Russian as “ridge”, “base” or “head”.
  • Excavations in this region have been ongoing since 1991, during all this time more than 8 thousand square meters have been discovered. km area. This is a lot, but, nevertheless, according to experts' forecasts, the earth’s stratum hides as much under itself.
  • Archaeologists today have already found the remains of humans and pets, various harnesses, saddlery tools, anvils, molds designed for casting metal products, arrowheads, and pottery tools.
