The unknown and severe Chukotka region inexplicably attracts and fascinates. You cannot be indifferent to her. Anyone who has ever visited those lands will never forget its greatness. The Chukchi Highlands evoke the strongest emotions, leave vivid impressions in memory and invert the spatial parameters that determine the rules of life. The appearance of this region was formed in the Quaternary.
To this day, a pristine landscape has been preserved here: unique expanses of lowlands, embossed outlines of archipelagos and coasts. The Chukchi Highlands are increasingly attracting specialists with historical and natural structures. In the past few years, research has been actively conducted in the field of tourism and recreation. The tourism industry is developing fruitfully: skiing, water, extreme and adventure tours, as well as hunting, fishing and swimming in hot mineral springs.
Climate
Despite the harsh climatic conditions, people continue to admire the Chukotka District. Almost all 9 months of the year there are heavy snowfalls and violent winds rage. In the frosty winter with temperatures up to -30 the Chukchi Plateau is different. The climate here is subarctic.
In the summer in the region it is cold, torrential rains constantly, in some places there is snow. Regardless of the time of year, blizzards hum and frosts crack. Permafrost is explained by the merger of two oceans with different atmospheric circulation. Chukchi landscapes
The pristine virgin beauty admires the Chukchi Highlands. The nature here is truly unique and beckons with choseni groves, stone kekuras (rocks peering out from under the water surface) and hot springs. You can admire the aurora and migration of whales forever. The region is distinguished by relict ice: ice veins, reservoirs and stone glaciers - large underground ice.
During excavations, archaeologists often discover the oldest remains of glaciers and cave blocks. Another feature of the Chukotka Territory is offshore seas, which are valuable natural resources. The East Siberian Sea is considered the coldest, the water in which rarely rises to a mark of +2 ยฐ C. The Bering Sea is warm.
An adornment of the region is the Anadyr River and the lakes Krasnoye, Pekulneyskoye and crater lake Elgygytgyn. Shrubs of willows, alders, fragrant poplar and birch grow in river valleys on talik sites. They are found mainly near the Anadyr basin. The amazing Chukchi Highlands are characterized by several important factors - the relief, rugged by through valleys, and deep-sea seas (the Arctic and Pacific Oceans).
Animal and plant world
Extreme climate did not become an obstacle to the life and development of flora and fauna. There are more than 900 plants on the territory of ChAO. Bushes of lingonberry, blueberry, cedar dwarf, alder grow on Chukchi land. Black and red currants, birch, and Daurian larch can be found in the river valley . The flora of the northern section boasts a variety of lichens (more than 400 species).
The Chukchi Highlands are famous for their unique fauna. There are animals listed in the Red Book in local forests , such as the polar bear, snow sheep, as well as 24 species of birds and sea inhabitants (blue and gray whales, finwale, minke whale, narwhal). The land is rich in ermines, sable, arctic fox, reindeer, wolves, mink and others. Amazing birds (tundra partridges, swans, ducks, guillemots, gulls) and insects (midges, mosquitoes, horseflies) live in the area.
The Bering Sea is full of various species of fish, as well as shrimp, crab and shellfish. In water bodies burbot, salmon, smelt, pike and so on are found. There are natural reserves in the district: Tundra, Wrangel Island, Omolonsky, Avtotkuul, Beringia, Chaunskaya Bay.
