The distance from Sergiev Posad to Kalyazin is small - a little more than 110 kilometers. It seems that you can overcome it at a good speed in an hour, but this is not so, despite the fact that the road surface on most of the way is very good.
The main problem of the route is traffic jams, especially on weekends in the warm season.
Road in Sergiev Posad
If you decide to take the road on Saturday or Sunday, the first traffic jams will be waiting for you in Sergiev Posad, first at the bend on the necessary Novouglichskoe highway, then at the intersection at the market and the Kapitoliy shopping center and the final one - through the large district railway located on leaving the city. Now, an automobile bridge is being built across the railway lines, which will go to the western detour under construction, so that in a couple of years the problem with congestion will be practically solved.
Going around the city along the Yaroslavl highway, then turning off onto the A-108 highway, is irrational. Firstly, there will also have to stand in traffic jams, especially in the area of intersection with Old Yaroslavka. Secondly, the two-lane road, many heavy trucks pass along it, so most of the way will have to crawl behind any truck without the ability to overtake. Thirdly, you will lose the opportunity to admire the beauties of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and other churches of the city.
From Sergiev Posad to Iudino
Finally, having lost in the worst case an hour and a half, you will find yourself on the highway 46K-8400 (Sergiev Posad - Kalyazin - Rybinsk - Cherepovets). There are many villages along the road, so most often the maximum speed will not exceed 60 km / h. Acceleration is not recommended, pedestrian crossings in settlements are equipped with speed bumps, surveillance cameras are installed in some villages (for example, Deulino, Krasnaya Storozhka), traffic police often come across (they especially like to stand in Iudino).
Shortly before the village of Remmash, traffic congestion begins again. The reason is a railway crossing, trains run 2-3 times a day. On Saturday, you’ll have to stand already from the turn to Peresvet.
The situation with this traffic jam, unlike the Sergiev Posad ones, will only worsen over time. From 2019, a huge landfill for household waste for the northern part of Moscow Region and Moscow will begin to operate near Sakharovo (a village near Shemetovo), so numerous garbage trucks will join the truckers.
From Judino to Kalyazin
After Remmash, almost until Kalyazin himself there should already be no problems with congestion, except perhaps episodic, as a result of the accident.
So, it takes at least two hours on weekdays and three on weekends to cover the distance from Sergiev Posad to Kalyazin by car.
