The construction of railways stretching across the Karelian Isthmus was a strong factor that made these lands a summer residence for the upper strata of society. The pleasant sea climate with warm summers, the dune landscape of the coastal territory, favorable conditions for sunbathing and water procedures, along with the developed recreational infrastructure, turned the Resort District of St. Petersburg into an attractive place for recreation for local residents and guests from other cities.
It was here that in the pre-revolutionary period, many representatives of the Russian elite had professions - professors Bekhterev and Pavlov, composers Glazunov and Asafiev, writers Gorky and Chukovsky, artist Repin and other famous personalities.

History
The territory occupied by the resort area of St. Petersburg, in the old days, was occupied by the Finnish people. In the XIII century, she came under Sweden. At the end of the Northern War, the inhabitants of the Swedish part of Karelia became subjects of the Russian Empire, and the border territory shifted to the north, beyond Vyborg. And only in the years 1811-1812 the Vyborg province again entered the land of the Autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Until the 40s of the last century, the border between Finland and Russia lay along the Sestra River.
Geographic location
Climatic conditions are very different in the territory occupied by Russia. St. Petersburg (the resort area is located in the northwestern part, along the coast of the Gulf of Finland) is not the most environmentally friendly city, but these places can be called the "light" of the metropolis. Forests of centuries-old pines, a diverse relief, a pleasant sea climate, many sandy beaches, the possibility of treatment with underground mineral waters and healing mud - all this attracts many guests to local sanatoriums throughout the year.
Climatic conditions and weather
The local climate has the properties of a maritime one - with a non-hot, humid summer and a long, moderately cold winter. The usual temperature in July is 18 degrees, in January - minus 8. The coldest month is February. Snow usually appears here in November and is present until mid-April. Spring in the region is late and long, and summers are moderate and warm, with alternating sunny or rainy days. Autumn is quite cloudy and foggy. They bathe on the coast of the Gulf of Finland from the beginning of July until the end of August. At the same time, the water is quite cool, its usual temperature in July is 20 degrees.
Natural and healing benefits of the area
We can distinguish the main environmental factors of the area:
- pleasant sea climate;
- the presence of sodium chloride (in Sestroretsk) and chloride-bicarbonate calcium-sodium water (in Zelenogorsk);
- rare sapropelic mud;
- beautiful natural infrastructure: plenty of forests, sandy seashore and numerous lakes.
The Gulf of Finland and pine groves create a health-improving microclimate in the Kurortny District, filling the air with negative ions and phytoncides. This area is quite promising in all respects. For example, the Sestroretsk resort is one of the country's unique health resorts, this is due to the presence of muds that are surprising in their way, called “gittia clays”. This mud solution is used as a separate therapeutic agent (it can be used for lotions, baths, physiotherapeutic procedures and for some other purposes). Also, the Sestroretsk resort is famous for its park of centuries-old pine trees, sand dunes, a wide clean beach, and the presence of radon mineral waters.
The abundance of such natural, recreational and healing benefits makes the rest in the resort area of St. Petersburg useful, well-being and simply interesting and enjoyable.
