The city of Manchester (England) belongs to the largest trade, financial, industrial and transport center of Lancashire (52 cities, 2.5 million people).

The history of the city began in the X century, when capital buildings began to appear in the places of the Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages, the city of Manchester was both a craft and a trading center. The name Manchester itself is translated as “chest-mountain” (mamm - “chest”, ceaster - “mountain”).

The industrial revolution in the XVIII century gave impetus to the more rapid development of the settlement. The city of Manchester quickly became the center of the cotton industry, equal in importance and importance to London, Liverpool, Birmingham.

Today we can already talk about the centuries-old history of this pearl of England and the world. Many architectural monuments are open for visitors to the city , including masterpieces such as the cathedral (1422-1520), the Athenaeum (classicism, 1837-1839), the Exchange building (1806-1809), the neo-Gothic Town Hall and, of course, the Art Gallery with its a unique collection of the period of the XVII-XIX centuries (all galleries, museums and exhibitions more than fifty).

The other side of Manchester is represented by ultramodern areas, vibrant shopping centers, skyscrapers and business lounges, many shops, youth clubs and restaurants (Exchange Square, North Quarter). Among the sports facilities that attract particular attention are Old Trafford (the legendary stadium of the famous Manchester United club), a cricket club and a velodrome.

New sights appeared on the map: Trinity Bridge, thrown over the waters of the River Erwell and leading directly to the Salford quarter.

Those who prefer to combine business with pleasure will enjoy visiting the Urbis (Cultural Center), Manchester University and the Old Library.

The educational network covers about two hundred institutions of various formats and directions (classical schools, specialized colleges, universities, etc.), and the history of some of them dates back several centuries. City University, for example, is the largest and most popular in the United Kingdom - 37 thousand students study here.

Music lovers (both modern and classical), who appreciate excellent performance and clear, filling sound, should visit at least one of the theaters: Apollo, Opera, Palastheater, Contact.

Manchester is a city whose photographs appear with enviable frequency in major publications. And this is understandable: city ​​landscapes are really very diverse and from each of them a special, unique atmosphere blows. Very colorful, for example, Manchester Castle, the first mention of which dates back to 1184. In 1912, it was described in more detail by the historian and writer Healer Bellock (Warfare in England). In the Middle Ages, the castle was a defensive line (along with the Thames line) and was surrounded by three ditches with water. Now it is already a beautiful architectural monument.

Due to its temperate climate, you can visit the city of Manchester at any convenient time of the year - it has rather warm winters and relatively cool summers.
