St. Petersburg Metro Map: Future Development Plan

The metro map of St. Petersburg seems to be posted everywhere: the stations themselves, maps, calendars, tourist guides and numerous Internet applications. At the moment, the St. Petersburg subway is not as wide and branched as, for example, the metropolitan, so many city residents using public transport know its scheme by heart. Nevertheless, the subway plans to grow and develop, for which the townspeople have been preparing for since 2011. What new stations are planned for opening from 2018 to 2025? Will there be new metro lines?

Three lines are planned for extension from 2018 to 2021: Frunzensko-Primorskaya, Right-Bank and Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya. The metro scheme of St. Petersburg will be replenished with whole sections: “Prospect of Glory” - “Shushary” on the purple branch and “Spasskaya” - “Mining Institute” on the orange. Two new stations will be attached to the green branch - Novokrestovskaya and Begovaya will follow each other from Primorskaya.

In the period from 2021 to 2025, several extremely important changes are planned for the St. Petersburg subway. The first will concern the Right Bank line: the metro builders plan to open a new section “Mining Institute” - “Harbor” in 4-6 years. However, given the unfulfilled plans of the 90s, it is difficult to fully trust the new promises. Nevertheless, in the same five-year plan, the metro scheme of St. Petersburg is going to expand to the sixth Krasnoselsko-Kalinin, or brown line. Also planned are the opening of the Shuvalovsky Prospect station (purple line) and Planernaya (green line).

The development of the St. Petersburg metro after 2025

After 2025 and until 2035, the St. Petersburg metro scheme, judging by the current plans, will not undergo radical changes. The metrostroevtsy’s project includes the completion of the violet line to the Kolomyazhskaya station with the eponymous depot, the end of the southwestern section of the Krasnoselsko-Kalinin line, the extension of the Kirov-Vyborg line from Veterans Avenue to Pulkovo Airport and other plans for the coming decade. Will the residents of Piskaryovka wait for the opening of the metro station closest to them? It is difficult to say unequivocally whether all the plans of metro builders will be implemented.

In addition, talk of a ring line, like Moscow, has been going on for the second decade. However, the line will be ready for commissioning at the most optimistic forecasts no earlier than in the 30s of the 21st century.
