Trieste. Italy. North Adriatic

Trieste is an ancient city in the north-east of Italy. It is possible that this is not the most famous of the Italian cities, but it has been known since antiquity. The very place where Trieste is located is already curious. Italy in this place just ends - this is its most northeastern point. Not far away is the border of Slovenia. At this point the Adriatic ends and the Balkans begin, of course, the border position left its typos on the local flavor.

This city is characterized by its atypicality and dissimilarity to others. It is widely believed that this is the "most non-Italian" of all Italian cities. This opinion has good reason; it is usually confirmed by those who first arrived in Trieste. Italy, which everyone knows and loves, looks a little different. As mentioned above, the outward appearance of the city was imprinted by its border position and the fact that throughout its long history Trieste was not always part of Italy: for a rather long period of time it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The entire Adriatic coast adjacent to the city was officially designated on the maps as the “Austrian Riviera”. Austrian influence can be traced in the external appearance of the city today. This is noted by those who happened to drive the entire Apennine Peninsula from south to north, having the city of Trieste as the final destination. Italy regained its sovereignty over this part of the Adriatic only after the First World War, and by that time the appearance of the town was already sufficiently formed by representatives of the Viennese architectural tradition. Nevertheless, the city is interesting and attractive for tourists, perhaps because of its atypical nature.

There is much less fuss, noise and crush, which cannot but cause positive emotions among tourists who find themselves on this northern shore of the Adriatic Sea. The city is calm, unhurried and conducive to hiking in the historical quarters of the center. There are fewer monuments and sights in it than in other historical provinces of Northern Italy. The most interesting is its southern part with the Grand Canal, the area of the Unification of Italy - sculptural groups and a fountain on it. The large canal on both sides is built up with quite interesting old buildings in the neoclassical style. Miramare's white-marble castle on the coastal cliff is quite famous and outwardly expressive. It is indicated on all tourist schemes, from the city center to it about eight kilometers. Against the backdrop of this magnificent architectural monument, tourists are very fond of taking pictures.
