Everyone knows how convenient it is when there are pockets on clothes where you can put small and often necessary things. When sewing clothes, various types of pockets are used. These are invoice and welt on fabric. In our article, we will consider how to properly make a pocket in the side seam. Use such parts, mainly in sports or loose clothing. They are convenient in that they donβt clatter at all, itβs not clear that something is there. Yes, and itβs very convenient to hold hands in such pockets.
Features of pockets in the seam
Such pockets are often made in the side seam, but they can also be placed in the relief folds of the product. Everything depends on the style of the dress. You can find such pockets in shorts, wide skirts, dresses, coats. The lining in such products is made of either the main fabric or the lining. You can make bright contrast, which will be visible to others. You can also make them in two parts. The upper part of the pocket will be from the main fabric, and the lower part from the lining. This is done so that the pocket is not visible.
Further we will consider how to sew a pocket into a side seam.
Pattern
To correctly make a pattern, you need to draw a template on paper. For this, pocket depth and width are measured. A rectangle is drawn. Do not forget to add 1 cm on each side to the seams and overlock treatment. On the long side, measure the pocket inlet in the side seam and add 4 cm in length. Then draw the lower rounding for the pocket using the patterns. The upper part of the pocket will be more gentle, and the bottom rounded.
In the photo above, the pattern is located on the back side. Before stitching a pocket in the side seam of the dress, the details must be turned upside down. Tailoring is carried out on the wrong side of clothes.
Pocket preparation
Before sewing a part to clothing, it must be prepared. To do this, two parts of the pattern are sewn along the round side and the edges are processed using an overlock or overlock foot of a sewing machine. Below, on the straight side of the pocket, 4 cm is measured, and this segment is healed at a distance of 1-1.5 cm from the edge. This is done to deepen the pocket opening so that the things that will be there do not fall out.
The approximate pocket sizes for an adult woman are as follows:
1. The length of the hole in the side seam is 15-16 cm.
2. From the waist line, the pocket should be located at a distance of 10-12 cm.
3. The rectangle of the pattern has a length of 20-22 cm, and a width of 14-15 cm.
On the side seams where you decided to sew pockets, you need to make protrusions, about 3 cm, and iron them in the opposite direction. Then, when the pocket is sewn into the side seam, the lining fabric will not be visible.
First way
This method of processing the pocket in the side seam is used in the case when the pocket is sewn separately, and then on the wrong side, the edges of its even part are sewn to the skirt clearance from one and the other.
First, both edges of the pocket are attached, and then two fabrics are formed - the main and lining - with an overlock or overlock foot of the sewing machine. Then the product is turned on the front side and the side edge is carefully ironed through a damp cotton cloth.
Second way
If you want to hide the lining so that it is not visible, then they act differently. At the side seams on the clothes, three centimeters of fabric are left on the protrusions, to which later parts of the pocket will be sewn. First, one detail of the pocket pattern is sewn to the protrusion, then separately the other to the second side of the skirt. Then the two parts are formed overlock foot and carefully smoothed inward.
Then comes the work on stitching and processing the pocket itself. To do this, we first attach 4 cm down, and then - around the entire circumference of the rounded part of the pattern. Then all edges are processed by overlock. It remains only to iron all the seams and turn the product to the front side.
This type of pockets is considered by the masters of cutting and sewing the easiest option. Indeed, in comparison with the slotted counterpart, it is not difficult to sew a pocket into the side seam. After reading the detailed description, any master will be able to cope with this task in a matter of minutes.
Do not forget that if you sew a bright and contrast pocket visible to the eye, then you need to use the first method. If you make protrusions and the pocket is completely hidden in the side seam, then the second method is suitable for you. Have a good work!
