Her original name was - “Kaluga”, by the same name of the nearby square. In 1921, the square was given the new name "Oktyabrskaya", and only on June 6, 1961 the station itself was renamed. Currently, the square is again called Kaluga, but the station has the same name as Oktyabrskaya.

The interior design, invented by L. Polyakov, is dedicated to the memory of the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War. It should be noted that the theme of victory was used in the construction of other metro stations, but only L. Polyakov was able to recreate the temple style. Rows of torches lead to the apse depicting the altar. It itself is made in blue, embodying the bright future of the Soviet people. The apse is closed by a metal fence made in the Empire style.

According to experts, this particular metro station is the first, the architecture of which is so reminiscent of the samples of temple architecture of the West and at the same time the basilica of early Christianity.

The ground pavilion is made in the form of a grand triumphal arch, which is outside decorated with bas-reliefs of women and men dressed in the uniform of the Soviet Army. The figures are illuminated by lamps located on the columns.

In 1990, the station's ground lobby was built into the building of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys. The pylons are lined with gray marble. They are decorated with torch-shaped lamps. They were made by A. I. Damascus from anodized aluminum. The track walls are lined with light yellow ceramic tiles and decorated with tiled wreaths. The floor is covered with granite in two colors: gray and red. The central hall along the perimeter is decorated with a patterned insert of alternating strips of marble of light and dark colors.

Halls with ticket offices and escalators are decorated with bas-reliefs made by G. I. Motovilov. These bas-reliefs depict armed warriors, battle flags and girls personifying glory. The pylons also have medallions depicting Soviet soldiers.
