The Scandinavian Peninsula is the largest in Europe. It is characterized by an interesting history and picturesque landscapes. On its territory there are three countries: Sweden, Norway and the northern part of Finland. which, in turn, comes from Scania - the name of the region in the southern part of the peninsula, which was previously part of Denmark, and now is part of Sweden. People settled here twelve thousand years ago, to which there is archaeological evidence.
The Scandinavian peninsula is located in different climatic zones: its climate ranges from subarctic in the north to marine in the south. The highest temperature recorded on the peninsula is 38 degrees Celsius, the coldest is 52.6 degrees Celsius. One fourth of the peninsula is beyond the Arctic Circle, while ninety-four percent of the population lives south of the Arctic Circle. Cape Nordkin is located in the Arctic - the extreme point of the northern continent. Here, in the mountains, is the largest glacier in Europe.
The Scandinavian Peninsula occupies most of the
Baltic Shield, which also includes Finland, the northeastern outskirts of Russia and the bottom of the
Baltic Sea. Many centuries ago, the stability of the Baltic shield began to decline, which caused a slow flooding of the area. When the ice finally melted, the shield plateau began to rise, which continues to our time. The coast, which is part of the Baltic Sea, is constantly in motion. Its rise is approximately one centimeter per year. However, the other side of the peninsula is constantly sinking. For many thousands of years, the Scandinavian peninsula was completely in the glaciers. Over time, melting, they led to the formation of the famous
Norwegian fjords.Most of the Scandinavian Peninsula is occupied by pine forests and
spruce trees. There are also
mixed and deciduous forests. They are home to a variety of animal species. In the forests there are many different birds, in the sea a large number of fish species. There are many protected areas and parks.
