Among other things, the Republic of Moldova is known for its wines, which are obtained from perhaps the best grape varieties in all of Europe.

The warm and dry climate of this small country allowed the local population to engage in large-scale fruit growing, including viticulture. It is no accident that Moldova is called the country of winemaking and endless vineyards. Here, just a few kilometers from its capital, there is also the largest wine cellar in the whole world, considered a kind of starting point for the so-called “wine tours” which are extremely popular today. It is a real city with street labyrinths, the length of which together reaches almost sixty kilometers.

Moldova is the capital

The capital of Moldova was founded at the beginning of the fifteenth century. And from that time on, her story is full of events of very different significance. Historic Chisinau makes its central part. For a very long time, the whole city was within these limits, whereas today it is only a small part of it, surrounded by a ring of modern buildings.

Despite the small cozy streets lined with greenery, reminiscent of a more provincial town, the capital of Moldova is considered a large transport hub. During the Second World War, many of its ancient buildings were destroyed, but many rich and ancient cathedrals and buildings were still preserved. And today many tourists come here to admire the grandeur of local architecture.

The capital of Moldova is famous for one of its most interesting sights - the Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin, built in its historical center.

Many residential buildings and structures with an administrative purpose, have the imprints of a long urban history. In many details of decorative finishes, the style of creations of such eminent architects of past centuries as A. Schusev and A. Bernardazzi is noticeable.

Chisinau is not only the capital, but also the largest city in Moldova. Geographically, it is located right in the center of the country.

There are many versions associated with the emergence of its name. Some translate it from Polovtsy as a “cave”, others claim the Hungarian roots of its name, but the most common version, according to which the capital of Moldova got its true name, is the Old Romanian word translated as “new source”.

Another attraction of the city is Chisinau Lake with stunningly picturesque shores - a favorite place for citizens. The current Green Theater and the Exhibition of Achievements are also located here.

There are a lot of war memorials in Chisinau, there is also a monument to Alexander Pushkin. The great poet in the republic is well known: he spent several years of his exile in these parts.

The capital of Moldova has a second name - “White City”. And this is not surprising, since the buildings in it were mainly built of white limestone.
