The largest industrial center of the Volga region received its subway in 1985. The first line was built over eight years. The city at that time was called Gorky. Today, when he gained his historical name - Nizhny Novgorod - the metro has already stepped on the right bank of the Oka River, in the historical upper part of the village.
The townspeople have long been waiting for this event. Especially those who have to stand in traffic jams.
Metro map of Nizhny Novgorod
The scheme of the Nizhny Novgorod metro does not yet make a strong impression. There are only two active lines, and both are in the process of active construction. To date, their total length reaches twenty kilometers, 14 stations are successfully operating. The third largest city in the Russian Federation is Nizhny Novgorod. Here, the metro is also the third largest in Russia, despite the fact that on the map it looks very modest.

But the large size of the city, its dispersion along the banks of the two largest rivers make this type of transport absolutely necessary. Too many residents have to travel long distances every day, moving from one end of the city to the other. No other type of public transport, which, naturally, Nizhny Novgorod has, could cope with such a significant volume of passenger traffic. Metro largely allows you to solve this problem. And no one doubts the need for its further construction. In the distant future, the third - Priokskaya - going in the direction of the Meshchersky district should be added to the currently existing Avtozavodskaya and Sormovskaya metro lines.
Architectural features
Most stations of the Nizhny Novgorod metro are at a shallow depth and have a column type design. This is also due to economic conditions. A significant amount of work on design and construction was done in a rather difficult historical period of the late eighties and early nineties.
Only two key stations are equipped with escalator lifts: Moskovskaya and Gorkovskaya. The path to the upper part of the city was opened by a custom-built metro bridge across the Oka. It is combined with a car. The long-awaited exit of the metro line to the historical and densely populated part of the city greatly facilitated the lives of many citizens. Without this
type of transport, it is now difficult to imagine the life of such a large city as Nizhny Novgorod. Metro organically blended with its appearance. The architectural image of the Gorkovskaya station compares favorably with those commissioned earlier. This can not but rejoice.
We are witnessing the development and formation of a new metro in Nizhny Novgorod. Its scheme has not yet been fully developed and is under discussion. The sequence of its design and construction is influenced by a number of various factors, such as the prospects for holding the World Cup in the distant future.
