What is a stack? The term is used in agriculture. Many of us were in the villages and saw huge heaps of hay. By the way, not all rural youth know what a stack is, and can not always explain to a person who is new what is its difference from a stack or a shock.
How do they stack hay or straw?
In ancient times, in our villages there were not a lot of rooms for storing straw, grain and other material. A skird is a folded and tightly compacted mass of hay or straw, which has an oblong shape. Having folded the material with a stack, it can be stored on the street even in winter. The convenience of this form of preservation of material was appreciated by many generations of Russians and Ukrainians.
Technological parameters of the stack
This stack is oblong. This is its main difference from a similar form of saving agricultural material on the street - stacks. He who does not know what a stack is, will never be able to distinguish it from a stack. The old inhabitants of the countryside, who have worked all their lives on the collective farm or state farm, know for sure that the stack is rectangular in shape and the stack resembles a geometric shape - a circle. The standard width of the stack is from 4.5 to 5.5 meters. It is precisely these sizes that can be considered optimal, because in ancient times, the stack was superimposed by people using forks. Without the availability of technical means, it was not possible to lay a stack of larger widths. The height of the "embankment" usually reached 6-7 meters. Again, these sizes corresponded to the ability of people to throw a stack without the use of technical means. From the stories of rural residents, conclusions can also be drawn about the length parameters of this figure. It cannot be shorter than 8 meters and longer than 25 meters. Such limitations, in principle, are difficult to explain. Probably, this is how historically developed tradition, and people adhere to it.

Skird is usually stored on the street near the house or in the field. In front of the house, peasants usually make small ricks so that they do not block the passage or passage to the estate. There are no such restrictions on the field, so you can stack more hay or straw.
Skirda is a symbol of the Russian village
Hay-laying was carried out by specially trained people - bird-keepers. This work was not easy, because the material had to be laid carefully, systemically and at high altitude. Any person would not be able to properly lay the hay, because to ensure the consistency of stacking required special skills.
We hope that now many residents of our country will know what a stack is.
