- continue to alternate the air and columns of CH in every third loop to the end of the row.
All odd rows will be considered purl. Even - facial.
The pattern of the "Scale" (crochet) continues the second row. It starts with three air loops. Then comes this knitting:
- on the right column of the pair of the previous row, you need to immediately connect 4 columns of CH;
- air loop;
- 4 columns of CH on the second of this pair;
- air loop;
- repeat the work on each odd pair of columns of the previous row (scales fit through one);
- in the last such pair, you need to connect the connecting column.
The crochet pattern of the “Scale” pattern continues in the third row. It is performed exactly as the first, but you need to remember to make a climb of three air loops. The same applies to all other odd series.
The fourth series of work is similar to the second. Only need to tie every even pair of columns of CH. And in the first it is necessary to make a connecting column. Then all the work is repeated from the first row.
What products use this pattern?
Wherever the thickness of the finished product is important. For example, in the manufacture of decorative pillowcases on a sofa cushion or a warm plaid. But these are not the only options. Warm jacket for the winter, a volumetric hat or beret, unusual mittens, a bag. This list goes on almost endlessly.
And if you take the yarn thinner, you get an extraordinary beauty shawl. It just needs to be knit a little differently. In this case, the “Scale Pattern” scheme (crochet) is performed from the corner, and gradually the canvas expands on both sides.

Openwork pattern "Scales"

So, we start crocheting. The "scale" pattern (diagram and description) starts with a set of chains. Moreover, the number of loops should be divided by eight. In the first row you will need to make one loop for lifting. In the first, connect the connecting column. In the fifth loop, perform nine columns of CH. In the ninth - connecting (from this moment the pattern is repeated, then nine columns of CH will again go). You need to complete the row on the next connecting column in the last loop of the chain.
Second row: with a lifting loop and a column of CH from the base of the lifting; two air; a connecting post in the fifth of nine connected in the previous row; two air; in the connecting column between the two scales of the previous row, make two columns of CH, separated by one air; two aerial and connecting to the top of the fifth. Continue this pattern to the end of the row, which must be completed with two columns of CH in the last loop.
The pattern of the "scale" (hook) continues in the third row:
- three lifting loops, 4 columns of CH at the base of the lifting chain;
- a connecting column in the same previous row (located at the top of the scale);
- 9 columns of CH in the arch from one air loop obtained in the previous row;
- continue this drawing to the end.
The fourth row repeats the pattern of the second. Only here it is not necessary to make an ascent, but to start from the moment when the connecting column is tied to the top of the scale.
Then knitting continues from the moment the first row has been described. But this is not the only pattern that resembles scales. There are many similar motives. Some of them are presented in the figure.
Where can I use such an openwork motif?
Naturally, for a light shawl and tunic for the summer. But you can go further and imagine it on the kitchen curtains. Or decorate them with a festive tablecloth. In all these cases, the “Scale Pattern” scheme (crochet) can logically fit into the product.
If you want to make an airy blanket from openwork squares, then one of the patterns with scales can be used here. Moreover, as in the usual version, when knitting goes from the bottom up. Or technologists work from the center. Then you need to calculate the sides of the square and draw its angles.
