One of the most interesting and useful inventions of mankind often becomes the hallmark of the city or even the whole country. Unusual designs, which are a miracle of engineering, not only help to overcome difficult areas. They are compared with real works of art, which you can admire endlessly.
World famous landmark
The Great Belt Bridge is a modern masterpiece, considered the most famous landmark in Denmark. In addition to its main function, Great Belt Bridge has amazing beauty. Connecting two islands (Zeeland and Funen), it is a complex engineering complex that is admirable. The unusual design, designed by the geniuses of technical and architectural thought, consists of three elements: a suspension structure, a low bridge and a railway tunnel located under water. The Great Belt Bridge in Denmark connects continental Europe and Scandinavia.
The ferry connecting Europe and Scandinavia
Eighteen kilometers of the transport system is not a whim of the locals, but a necessity. Previously, the Danes used a ferry or air transport to get from the capital to other cities of the country, and such trips became too expensive for them. And after the appearance of a bridge equipped with a suspension structure and an underwater tunnel across the Great Belt Strait, the number of rail and road transport increased several times. Construction lasted about 10 years, and its cost amounted to more than 21 million Danish kroner.
The scale of the unique structure crossing the Great Belt Strait is amazing! But this can only be understood from the deck of a ship sailing under the crossing. Despite its dimensions, the heavy construction made of concrete and metal looks very elegant.
Every day about 27 thousand cars pass by, and thanks to an amazing architectural masterpiece, the journey from Copenhagen to the city of Odense takes only 60 minutes. The construction of the crossing has reduced the number of flights between the administrative center of Denmark, Esbjerg and Aarhus.
Now the train has become the main public transport for the Danes, which has led to tangible energy savings in the state of Northern Europe. Power supply facilities provide wind farms, as if grown from water.
Three pieces of construction
The eastern part of the structure is a suspension bridge with a central and two side spans. Reinforced concrete pylons rise to a height of 280 meters. They consist of cone-shaped columns hollow inside and joined by traverses (elements of the supporting structure).
The viaduct, located in the western part of the structure, consists of two adjacent bridges.
A railway tunnel runs parallel to the eastern construction of the Great Belt Bridge.
Interesting Facts
Parallel to the road and rail are separated by a small span of 18 meters.
The length of the underwater tunnels extending to a depth of eight kilometers.
The length of the third largest suspension bridge in the world, the Great Belt, is 1.5 kilometers.
During hurricanes, the crossing stops for the safety of the locals.
This is the only toll road in the country. The fare will have to pay from 18 to 130 euros, depending on the type of transport.
More than fifteen million people visit it annually.
If you look from afar at the amazing Bolshoi Belt Bridge, the acquaintance of which delights tourists, you get the impression that it goes directly into the water. The unique design made life easier not only for Danes, but also for travelers visiting Denmark by car.
