Picturesque nature and an abundance of natural wealth is famous for the Volgograd region. Svetly Yar is an urban-type settlement located in the southeast of the European part of our country, just 54 km from the center of Volgograd. This settlement has not only an unusual name, but also a very interesting history.
Historical reference
In the first half of the XVIII century, on the site of a modern settlement, there was a watch outpost, which went down in history as Tatyaninsky. In those days, there were practically no large permanent settlements along the banks of the Volga, and the modern Volgograd region was little developed. Svetly Yar is the name first mentioned in 1785. Then the village was officially founded on the basis of an outpost by order of Prince P.S. Potemkina. According to the census of 1816, 278 men and 237 women lived in the village.
The origin of the unusual name is not exactly known. Most historians agree that the settlement was named after the term “yar”, which means a river terrace. It is light because it is found in this area quite a lot of the so-called “chocolate” clay, which when dried has a very light shade. An interesting fact: initially the village of Svetly Yar was located directly on the banks of the Volga River. However, due to constant seasonal floods in 1833, the village was moved to a safe elevation near the Luchka River. In some documents, from the moment of resettlement, the village is mentioned under the name “Luchka”, right up to 1918.

In modern history, Svetly Yar of the Volgograd region is known as an urban- type settlement. The village has a developed industry. There are two large factories, one of which produces sausages, and the second - soft drinks. Also in the village production of building materials and furniture has been established. Svetloyarsky district has its own forestry and salt is being mined.
According to the 2016 census, the population of Svetly Yar in the Volgograd Region was 11,869 people. The village has developed infrastructure, there are educational, cultural and health facilities. It is worth noting that in this village there are supermarkets of large retail chains: Magnit and Pochochochka, as well as many private stores offering customers goods of various categories. There are no problems with transport, the inhabitants of the village move on buses and taxis. Buses regularly go to the regional center, the city of Volgograd.
