Svetlanovskaya Square (St. Petersburg)

Svetlanovskaya Square is one of the largest in St. Petersburg. It has a large transport hub of the Northern capital. It intersects several large urban arteries. This is Prospectors Avenue, Engels Avenue. As well as Svetlanovsky and Second Murinsky Avenues. The square officially got its name in 1975. It is formed from the nearby Svetlana plant, which was engaged in electrical engineering.

History of the square

Svetlanovskaya Square

Svetlanovskaya Square before the October Revolution did not exist. In its place was a major intersection of the Vyborg highway and Murinsky Prospekt. Nearby was a courtyard, which belonged to the Arzamas Novodevichy Convent.

In 1906, a monastery chapel appeared on this site. Later it became the church of St. Alexius. In 1920, it was allowed to serve the liturgy, but not for long. Soviet power insisted on its closure. Services in it were interrupted in 1930.

During World War II, a large evacuation center was organized on Svetlanovskaya Square. The hungry and sick were gathered around the houses, soldered with soy milk, and if possible sent to the mainland on Lake Ladoga. Thus, hundreds of Leningrad residents were saved. The chapel was demolished in the 60s, when the local architectural ensemble was finally formed.

The origin of the square

Svetlanovskaya Square got its start thanks to the tram ring, which appeared on this site near the Svetlana enterprise in 1929.

By the 60s, the actual formation of the eastern part of the area was completed. Before it was extended, in particular, Svetlanov Avenue. The tram ring was eliminated by this time.

By that time, a large food market was operating here. According to the master plan for the development of the city, the building of the district executive committee should have appeared in its place. It was supposed to be a key part of the area. A fountain was planned in the center. But these projects have not been implemented.

But in the late 70s, the market was still liquidated. New tram tracks were laid here . They broke the lawns and planted seedlings. The area has acquired a modern state.

The architectural ensemble of the square

The architectural ensemble of Svetlanovskaya Square in St. Petersburg is actually formed by three buildings. They are located in a semicircle. These are houses on Engels Avenue with numbers 21, 23 and 25.

Their authors are famous Soviet architects Savkevich, Belov and Schrรถter. According to their design, these buildings were built in the 50s of the XX century.

Initially, the radio building was located in the central building of this architectural ensemble. Today, an educational institution with a similar profile has opened in its place. This is an engineering school of electronics.

In two other buildings there are shopping facilities (in the Soviet years they were all combined into the famous Svetlanov department store), and in the other there is a laboratory building, which was directly related to the Svetlana enterprise.

There is no building on the opposite side of the square. On the even side of Engels Avenue, there are only two inconspicuous buildings that are visually separated from the highway by squares and small parks. In the central part of the square is a green zone.

Currently, Svetlanovskaya Square in St. Petersburg has somewhat changed.

Her architectural ensemble was supplemented by a high-rise building along Zelenogorskaya Street. He immediately made it civilized and modern. At the same time, it caused discontent among many human rights defenders who advocate the preservation of the historical appearance of the Northern capital.

But many still like Svetlanovskaya Square in St. Petersburg. The Vyborgsky district in which it is located considers it to be its decoration.

Square on Engels Avenue

This place in St. Petersburg is well known because of the conflict between local residents and developers that arose in 2007. It was planned to build a shopping center with a restaurant in the green zone near house No. 28 on Engels Avenue.

The residents of the neighboring houses who opposed this project found a lot of violations during the execution of permits for work. For example, the developer was trying to begin the illegal development of the pit. The officials responsible for issuing these permits partially admitted their mistakes.

As a result, the consequences of illegal work were eliminated. And in 2009, a square was destroyed at this place. Svetlanovskaya Square of St. Petersburg, the photo of which is in this article, this square, of course, adorns.

By the way, the square was named after Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time was the president of the country.

In 2009, an initiative appeared to establish a memorial sculpture "Blockade Madonna" in the square, the project of which was prepared by the St. Petersburg sculptor Mikhail Zvyagin. She was supposed to recall the most difficult months in the life of the city during the Great Patriotic War. But the project has not yet been implemented.
