How to make do-it-yourself modular paintings for interior decoration

Modular paintings are not a new phenomenon in design art. Such experiments were carried out by artists back in the 60s of the past century, when the aesthetics of minimalism in the design of rooms came into fashion. Modern interiors with a minimal amount of furniture and large free spaces of walls that need to be “filled” with color or with original, unusual avant-garde elements of decor have revived this way of decoration. What are modular or segmented paintings? This is a picturesque canvas or photo panel, divided into several separate modules, which are assembled on the wall so that as a whole a single work is created. The picture is divided into segments in different ways: into longitudinal, transverse or diagonal parts, or into both. Then each individual fragment is placed on the wall, leaving small gaps between them, parallel or offset. Segmented creations can also consist of a large number of abstract fragments that together resemble a patchwork quilt. More often they make pictures modular on canvas, pulling each fragment onto a separate stretcher, the baguette is not used. Moreover, the modules can be of the same size and shape, or different. Collected on the wall, they create an additional decorative effect.

Do-it-yourself modular paintings.
DIY modular paintings not difficult. For this, ready-made murals or reproductions of large-sized paintings printed on cardboard are most often used. You can take any photograph you like, enlarge and print it in a specialized company. How to make the most modular picture?

Depending on what is the basis for the segmented creation - photo printing on paper or drawing on canvas - choose its basis. The canvas is pulled on a special stretcher - this is a frame made up of wooden battens (often used by artists) - using a construction stapler. Photo printing on thick paper or cardboard is glued to a base made, for example, of polystyrene foam, other lightweight synthetic materials that are easy to pick up at a hardware store. It is important that they have an even, smooth surface, light weight, easily fasten to the wall and be voluminous (at least 1.5 cm thick). Then the modular paintings, made with their own hands, will look more impressive.

After the base is prepared, the subframes of the right size are knocked together, the foam sheets are purchased, and they proceed to the next stage. The picture is first visually, and then with a pencil divided into separate segments-modules. The dividing lines are carried out in different ways, the main thing is that after assembly on the wall you get an “impressive” work. Then, along the drawn lines, the picture is cut and glued to the prepared base. In this way, do-it-yourself modular paintings by yourself from photowall-paper or reproductions printed on paper are well obtained. The edges of each fragment coincide with the edge of the base, so there is no distortion of the whole product.

Modular paintings on canvas.

Modular paintings made on canvas have certain specifics. The canvas must be pulled and fixed on the back of the subframe. To do this, each fragment must have a certain margin overlapping the picture. Therefore, for a modular work, it is necessary to have not one whole canvas, which is divided into parts, but individual segments printed on canvas with a “margin”, from which the whole work is then compiled. It is much simpler to make modular paintings with your own hands from the finished fabric with a bright abstract pattern that does not require exact combination of the picture. We cut out pieces of fabric of a size so that they can easily be pulled onto a subframe and secured from the back. When choosing a pattern, it should be noted that after pulling on the frame, the pattern is slightly deformed, changing its shape. Then we place ready-made modules on the wall in the desired sequence. The modular picture is ready.
