The Mother Motherland monument in Kiev is visible from almost any area of the Ukrainian capital. How did the Kiev Motherland appear?
The original design of the statue belonged to the sculptor Eugene Vuchetich, the author of the sculpture in Stalingrad. It was planned that the woman’s figure would be gilded, and a 30-meter waterfall would break from her legs into the Dnieper. However, the author was unable to complete the work before his death, and therefore Vasily Boroday further worked on this statue. The Ukrainian architect slightly changed the original project in collaboration with other sculptors. There are legends that the Kiev metropolitan was negotiating with the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine so that Motherland in Kiev would not exceed the bell tower of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra in height. To date, it is not known for certain whether this is true or fiction. However, the difference between the structures is really 12 meters, and the statue is below the bell tower.

The sculpture is a figure of a woman with her hands raised up, in one of them is a sword, and in the second - a shield. The height of the statue itself is 62 meters, along with the pedestal - 102 meters. At the base of the statue is a museum. According to the initial idea, the sculpture was to be covered
with gold leaf. But instead sheathed the statue with stainless steel. One sheet of skin weighs at least 25 tons. In order to assemble the statue, we needed a hundred-meter crane, made specifically for this project. According to the calculations of engineers, this structure will stand idle for at least one and a half centuries, and it is able to withstand an earthquake of up to 6 points. Inside the figure are two passenger elevators, two observation platforms are equipped - one in each hand. In 2003, one of the tourists fell from a site on his arm with a shield. Due to this incident, excursions were stopped for some time, but after the reconstruction of the fences were resumed. Today it’s impossible to physically fall from the site. At the same time, small openings were left in the fences for photo and video shooting of city panoramas.
