Many mothers dress their daughters at the New Year's party as princesses, often ordering evening dresses for this, the style of which would probably suit them themselves. If you are not one of them and understand that childhood passes very quickly, then choose something more original and age-appropriate for your child, for example, a parrot costume. Do it yourself is quite simple. In this case, you can choose an option in which your daughter will compete with any Snow White or Cinderella. There are also parrot costumes that suit boys and even toddlers who are just learning to walk.
What you need to create an outfit
Depending on what kind of Christmas parrot costume you are going to make with your own hands, you will need:
- any feathers;
- food colors of bright colors;
- old clothes;
- cardboard;
- acrylic paints;
- boa for decoration of bouquets;
- translucent organza of yellow, red and blue color (for a variant with a magnificent dress);
- wire;
- glue;
- paper;
- pencil;
- ruler;
- scissors;
- threads.
Well, if you have the opportunity to use a sewing machine. However, in the absence of it, you can choose an option that is made entirely by hand.
DIY parrot costume for a girl
Mothers who want the daughter's outfit to be not only original, but also beautiful, should work hard and sew a dress for her from a translucent organza of several bright colors. It is made either from scratch or old clothes are used. For example, you can decorate an appropriately bright plain blouse. To do this, feathers painted by soaking in food solution of saturated colors or 3-4 frills of different colors are sewn to the sleeves and to the neck and to create something like a frill.
Next, cut out from the organza 5 stripes, the length of which is 2 times longer than the waist circumference of the girl. The width of the first of them should be equal to the length of the dress, and each subsequent one should be 5 cm shorter. The edges of all the strips are cut in the form of feathers and processed, holding above the flame so that they do not begin to crumble. Each is sewn together in the form of a pipe, and the upper edge is wrapped and sewn. Gum is threaded into the resulting drawstring.
When the skirt is ready, it is worn over a decorated blouse. To hide the junction of the two parts of the outfit, you can make a wide belt, sew feathers on it and tie a bow on the back.
Wings
If you chose a chic parrot costume, with your own hands, in addition to the dress, you will have to make accessories for it. The main one is the wings. For their manufacture, a skeleton is formed from the wire, which is then tightened with a fabric. Then you can choose one of the following options:
1. Cut from a fabric of two colors in one strip with a width of 15 cm. Decorate along the bottom edge as the hem of the dress. Sew in two rows along the edge of the “wings” with an indent of 5 cm.
2. Completely hide the surface of the fabric chosen for a tight fit, under a layer of feathers, using several multi-colored boas for bouquets.
Accessories
If the girl is a schoolgirl, then the head should not be decorated with a design with a beak. Instead, it’s better to take as a basis the pattern of the Venetian mask and decorate it with feathers. You can also use the bezel with the appropriate decor.
DIY parrot costume for a boy
The outfit of a tropical bird is suitable not only for a girl. It can also be sewn for little son. It will be much easier to cope with such a task if you have on hand shorts and a long-sleeved T-shirt in bright colors.
To make the simplest costume of a parrot with your own hands, just sew a cloak. It should resemble the shape of wings and tail and be fixed on the back with rubber rings worn on the wrists and shoulders.
For its manufacture should:
- cut out two semicircles of paper with a diameter the length of a child’s hand and a carrot-shaped figure;
- fold the base fabric in half and, using patterns, apply the contours of the wings and tail to it;
- cut out all the details, connect them in two, sew on a typewriter and turn inside out;
- draw a pen-shaped figure with a truncated end;
- transfer the contour to the fabric and cut out such a number of details so that it is possible to sheathe the entire edge of the wings and body of the parrot along with the tail;
- decorate the cloak with feathers, preferably in 3 rows;
- to fix the rings of elastic bands in the right places (at the end of the wings and at the place of their connection with the body).
Beanie
If you are going to make a parrot costume with your own hands, the photo of which is presented above, you need to sew a hat with a beak. To do this, you need to cut an oval from a knitted or other stretch fabric, the width of the narrow part of which will be equal to the semicircle of the child’s head. The length is calculated by the formula: (width plus 10 cm) x 2. It is cut into two halves and stitched. In the upper part, they are sewn perpendicular to the main seam to get a hat. The headpiece is turned out and the lower edge is processed, having first been turned inside.
Next, make a beak. For this, a shape of the desired shape is cut out of paper. Transfer it to paper and cut out two parts from a double folded fabric. They are stitched together, turned out and stuffed, for example, with synthetic winterizer. Attach the beak to the cap. Paste the eyes. If there is a desire, complement the headdress with feathers.
Parrot costume for baby: option 1
Who said that children who, due to their age, don’t go to kindergarten, cannot take part in the New Year’s carnival? A colorful parrot costume is perfect for your baby. With your own hands it can be made from a bright-colored jacket with a hood. To do this, you need:
- cut out strips of different colors from old clothes or from foamiran rolls 15 cm wide (in the latter case, you will not have to process the slices);
- cut identical triangles from them at an equal distance to get an imitation of feathers;
- sew them along the side seams of the jacket and sleeves;
- cut tail from fabric;
- to fix multi-colored feathers on it;
- sew the resulting tail to the jacket at the back;
- stick large eyes on the hood;
- make a beak as described above;
- sew it to the hood;
- complement the jacket with brightly colored pants.
If the jacket is without a hood, then you can make a hat from a children's baseball cap. Her visor is painted bright. Eyes are glued, and a sultan of feathers is fixed on the crown.
Costume for the baby: option 2
If the house has an old older child’s sweatshirt in green, yellow, blue or red, then it can be used to make a baby’s costume. Enough for this:
- make a drawstring at the bottom (if it is not) and thread an elastic band;
- triangles are cut from strips of shiny fabric of the same width of 3-4 bright colors;
- sew them along the side seams (see photo);
- on the hood make a drawstring around the edge (if absent);
- thread the braid or elastic band;
- to the seam connecting the hood with the sweatshirt, sew “feathers” cut from the fabric, the same as that used to design the side seams;
- yellow beak is made;
- sew it to the hood;
- they attach a crest to it.
The parrot costume is complemented with bright plain tights. You can replace them with tight pants, preferably red.
Now you know how to make a parrot costume with your own hands, and you can make an original and bright outfit for your daughter or son.
