In 1958, construction of a new reservoir began near the city of Kharkov. Construction work lasted 5 years. And in 1964, the Pecheneg reservoir was already functioning. Locals call it the Salt Sea. The purpose of creation is the water supply of the city of Kharkov. During the construction process, some areas were flooded, in particular, villages. Namely: Meadows, Sands, Sapovka, Pisarevka, October, Novodonovka, Komsomol. Some settlements flooded the new reservoir only partially. These are Old Saltov, Upper Saltov, Moldova, Holtomlya, Martovoy, Metallovka, Rubizhne.
Short description
By the method of formation, the Pecheneg reservoir can be called a river valley. It belongs to the basin of the Seversky Donets River. The constructed dam has a length of 2.7 km. The area of the reservoir is 86.2 square meters. km, length - 653 km. It refers to the channel, artificial type, medium size. Water and runoff are regulated year-round. That is why the volume of its water is unchanged and is 383 cubic meters. km The Pecheneg reservoir, the depth of which mainly varies within 5 m, has such places where the bottom moves away from the surface by almost 20 m.
The location of the reservoir and its task
The dam of the Pecheneg reservoir is located near the village of Pecheneg in the Chuguevsky district of Kharkov region. The largest city closest to this reservoir is Kharkov (regional center). It was for its water supply that a reservoir was built.
Earlier on this place there was already an artificial reservoir. It was called the Kochetok reservoir. Kharkov needed a lot of fresh water. The new reservoir was supposed to cope with this task in full. At a small dam, the construction of a hydroelectric station is planned. On the banks of the reservoir there is a wonderful recreation center. The Pecheneg reservoir is large enough, so everyone can find something to their liking, have a wonderful rest and have a good time. Tourists are not only locals, but also visitors from nearby areas.
Underwater wildlife
This reservoir was founded on the river Seversky Donets. Stunning and picturesque landscapes are located along the perimeter of its coastline. In the reservoir itself there are a lot of fish that local fishermen like to catch. The bottom of the reservoir is not easy, it is with holes, piles, eyebrows. The water temperature in summer is from 22 to 28 degrees Celsius. In winter, the pond freezes strongly, the ice thickness is 40 cm.
Fishing is the most common holiday on the Pecheneg reservoir. More than 30 species of a wide variety of fish live in its waters. This is roach, ide, pike, tench, perch, perch, bream. Now do you understand why fishermen love this pond so much? This is not all of the listed species, there are a lot of them and they are really tasty. Fishermen in these parts can be found both in winter and in summer.
Vegetable world
The Pecheneg reservoir is simply created for recreation. There are camps, recreation centers, equipped beaches, sports complexes. A variety of water activities is offered: yachting, romantic boat trips, catamarans and other water transport. The right bank of the reservoir is very high and steep, with a gorgeous oak forest growing on it. The left one is low and gentle, there is mostly coniferous forest.
Dense vegetation prevails on the banks of the reservoir, here you can enjoy picking mushrooms and berries, and just come to relax with family and friends, fry kebabs and swim, play games in nature. It is also a great place for archaeological excavations, which are held here annually.
Conservation area
The Pecheneg reservoir, thanks to its unique animal world, has become world famous. A whole park is organized here. It is called the “Pechenezhsky Field”, the territory is under protection, as a large number of various amazing animals live on it. Some of these species are listed in the Red Book of Europe. The remaining representatives (18 in total) are in the Red Book of Ukraine and 14 species are under the protection of the Kharkiv region. "Pechenezhskoe field" is located on the shore of the reservoir amidst an abundance of recreation facilities and sports facilities, as well as children's camps.
