Talk about tapestry stitches

Tapestry seams are characterized by the density of embroidery. In this technique, carpets are woven and patterns are embroidered with needles. In appearance, the seam resembles a half-cross, but the difference can be seen both on the inside and in the style of execution, since the tapestry seam is not one stitch, but a whole series of them.

How to embroider with a tapestry seam?

tapestry seams

This type of embroidery begins from right to left, creating oblique columns on the inside. If you embroider crosses with a tapestry seam, then the picture becomes voluminous and dense. The beginning and end of embroidery is the same:

  • when adding the threads, the mouline thread is fixed with a loop;
  • leave a single thread on the wrong side 3-5 cm long, holding it with your finger, bring it to your face and โ€œsewโ€ the tail under the stitches;
  • at the end of embroidery, hide the thread under 5-6 stitches and cut it under the โ€œrootโ€.

Standard tapestry stitches:

  • Squint. This stitch is like a half cross. He is embroidered on the canvas in the same "squares" as the usual cross. To do this, draw the needle from the lower left corner diagonally to the upper right, make the next stitch from the lower left to the upper right. A new series is being done similarly.
  • Long oblique. This stitch is embroidered according to the pattern described above, only on two โ€œsquaresโ€ of the canvas, that is, the width of the seam is one cell of the canvas, and the height is two.

Original cross-stitch: tapestry stitch "mosaic"

  • Exciting. This stitch is embroidered as an elongated oblique seam, only the next row starts from the middle of the first row, as if capturing half the stitch. That is, the tapestry seam in height is equal to two cells of the canvas, then the second row will begin with the second cell of the first row.
  • Mosaic. For this seam element, you need 4 canvas cells: two in width and height. We begin to embroider from the lower left corner of the 1st cell of the canvas and enter diagonally into the upper right corner of the 1st cell. Next, the needle is removed from the lower left corner of the 2nd cell to the upper right corner of the 1st cell of the canvas. The last element of this stitch starts from the lower left corner of the 2nd cell (upper half) and is inserted into the upper right corner of the 2nd cell of the canvas. Outwardly, an element of 3 stitches should be obtained: short oblique, elongated oblique, short oblique. The next row begins with a short half-cross as a continuation of the diagonal cross-stitch.

Fancy Tapestry Stitches

  • Pillow. These tapestry seams are embroidered in square blocks (with a side of 4 cells), which, filling from different sides, you can get the original direction of the pattern. For one block, you need to make 7 obliques of different lengths: a half-cross with a length of 1 cell (cells), a long oblique size of 2 cells, a stitch of 3 cells, a central tapestry of 4 cells. and then in descending order: 3 stitches in 3, 2, 1 square.
  • Crossed Pillow. It is done in the same way as the previous one, only from the middle the square is intersected by tapestry stitches from the large to the smaller seam.
  • Vertical. These stitches are made as regular slanting or elongated, only vertically, and not diagonally.

  • Padded, voluminous. First, draw a line on the face along the length of the stitches, which is covered with tapestry oblique or elongated oblique. There will be the same tapestry seam from the inside, and convex stitches from the outside.

Try embroidering tapestry stitches in a simple pattern with different stitches and see how the same pattern plays in a new light.
