About the Stavropol Territory

From 1768 to 1774, one of the Russo-Turkish wars lasted, the final stage of which was the signing of the Kuchuk-Kainardzhinsky world. This meant that the new border should begin from the mouth of the Terek River, flow through Mozdok, and further north-west, to the fortress of St. Dmitry. Today it is a well-known Rostov-on-Don. Thus, it became necessary to close the territory on the southern side of Russia. The task of creating powerful outposts to protect the state was entrusted to General Potemkin. So, on April 24, 1777, the Empress approved the construction of the Azov-Mozdok line. In early November, they laid down the fortress at number 8 and called it “Moscow. But already on the 22nd of the same month the name was changed to Stavropol. So, on November 22, 1777, the story of the “city of Christ” began, as his name sounds in Greek. But as a region, it was formed only in February 1924.
