Voronezh Airport is a transport hub in Chernozemye serving international and Russian passenger traffic. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Chertovitsky (the second name of the airport) operates in less than half of its production capacity, but it remains the largest hub in the region.
Voronezh Airport: photos, historical information
The civil airfield complex in Voronezh was built in 1933. Already in the summer of 1933, it served as a transfer point for aircraft that followed from Moscow to Stalingrad. Before the war, the state of the runway did not allow the quality of service for civilian aircraft. Only by 1946 were an air terminal built, as well as office buildings.
Voronezh (airport) begins to actively develop in the 60s. In 1964, the Voronezh squadron was formed, and new Soviet-made aircraft were also received. In 1971, a new airfield complex began to operate near the village of Chertovitskoe.
By 1980, the Voronezh fleet was replenished with medium-range Tu-134, Yak-45, and M-15 aircraft. The runway was reconstructed. The throughput was 400 people per hour.
In the post-Soviet period, namely since 1993, passenger traffic was reduced almost four times, and the Voronezhavia company was created on the basis of the former airport. After 2 years, the airport was given international status.
In the 2000s, flights from Chertovitsky are operated only by Polet Airlines, the passenger flow drops to a critical value, and the infrastructure wears out. Since 2011, large-scale reconstruction works begin. In 2013, the first Boeing 737 airliner belonging to the UTair Russian carrier was adopted. The passenger flow for 2014 amounted to more than 400 thousand people.
