When knitting sweaters, sweaters, cardigans, dresses and other shoulder products, beginner needlewomen have a question about how to close the armhole. It should coincide with the selected pattern, be round and look neat.
Consider what an armhole is and how to close it properly.
A little about armhole
The armhole is the cutout into which the sleeve of the shoulder product is sewn. Also, the armhole is present on things for which a sleeve is not provided (sleeveless shirt, T-shirt, sleeveless dress ).
The cutout can be wide, narrow or elongated, depending on the model of the product.
The armhole is the so-called curved line, which should be knitted in a certain way. In addition to armholes, almost all types of neck, sleeves, shoulders, and shelves can be attributed to βcurved linesβ.
The calculation of the armhole shelves
Consider the ready-made calculation of the armhole of the left shelf, which you can use when knitting your products.
First you need to determine the number of loops in the width of the armhole (in the photo, the AB segment). Next, divide the resulting number of loops into four identical parts. If it was not possible to divide without residue, then add it to the part where the side seam will go.
In each part received (except the first), the loops must again be divided into segments. We divide the second segment in this way: 3 + 3, the third - 2 + 2 + 2, the fourth - 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1.
Mark this data on the pattern where the armhole passes. This will help you not to get lost in the diminution.
When the knitting of the shelf reaches the armhole, close at the beginning of the front row of six loops. Next, tie the row to the end, turn the work over and close the last three loops in the wrong row. Continue to decrease to the fourth part, based on the calculations transferred to the pattern.
In the fourth part, reduce one loop in each front row.
After making an armhole, knit six to seven rows without additions or decreases. Next, you need to make a few additions (they are marked β+β on the diagram). Add one loop three times at the same distance.
According to the same principle, close the armhole of the right shelf and back.
How to make an armhole with an elastic band?
In products where sleeves are not provided, the armhole remains open, so it must be beautifully designed. Consider a simple way to make a cutout with an elastic band 1x1 or 2x2.
To begin, make a shoulder seam of the shelf and back and lay the product face up. Now put on circular knitting needles all the loops that make up the armhole. This can be done with a knitting needle or with a hook. Knit the first row with your rubber band. Turn the work over and knit according to the drawing. Having knitted the desired width of the strap, close the loops in an elastic way. In a similar way, process the second armhole. Sew the edges of the strap and at the same time make a side seam.
