As early as the 13th century, the river was a border zone between the Ryazan principality and the Golden Horde. There are two versions of the name. According to the first, it’s all because of the black color of water, and the word itself has proto-Indo-European roots - gwer, that is, black. According to the second version, the roots of the word are Finno-Ugric. The word "thief" or "wur" meant a forest, that is, a forest river.
In the Soviet period, 3 hydroelectric power stations were built on the river:
- Soldatchinskaya.
- Peresypkinskaya.
