Knitters are a very specific people. They may be interested in the most complicated design developments and save thousands of pictures with knitted clothes of the craziest shapes and colors, but with the onset of cold weather they will certainly take up tools and create good old socks or classic hats and scarves.
The situation is exactly the same when you need to make a cloak for a child or an adult: after looking through pages with images of Irish lace, "freeform" and other frills, we just knit a poncho with knitting needles. The schemes used are the most common. True, sometimes they are combined with each other and make up new combinations.
Yarn for poncho
There are many varieties of wraps: they can be warm or cotton, dense or openwork, everyday or elegant. This article will discuss how to insulate for the winter and knit a poncho with knitting needles (a scheme, and not one, will be attached to each model).
Based on the purpose of the product, the material should be selected warm, but light. Otherwise, it may turn out to be voluminous, but too heavy. On average, about 800 grams of yarn will be required (provided that its thickness is not more than 300 m / 100 grams) and a poncho pattern.
It is not difficult to knit with knitting needles, but if it contains braids or bulky "bumps", then the material consumption will increase by 10%. You should also consider high collars and brushes (if any). A neckline with a height of 18 cm will require at least ½ a skein, the same amount will go to a fringe or brush.
Pattern for lazy knitters
The poncho scheme we presented , with knitting needles , does not require any special skills. It is enough to know how the front, back loops and crochets are performed. The product consists of one part made round-off.
The set of rows is the neck. From the second row to the end of the canvas, additions should be made in two places (which should be opposite each other). To get the desired shape, you need to expand the canvas by four loops in each front row.
To do this, select one loop from two sides and mark them with markers. Then, double crochets are made before and after the marked spots, and in the wrong rows these crochets are knitted, which leads to the formation of new loops.

Classic poncho
The photo in the article depicts a product with the simplest cut that you can think of. In fact, it is a rectangle with a neck. Next, we offer a poncho scheme.
Knitting such a product does not fit along, but across. That is, the typesetting edge becomes one side, and the last row - the second.
Therefore, the braids are also located across the poncho. The drawing on the details of the front and back is the same, but is made in the mirror order. Back:
- On the left side there is a strap (5 loops of garter stitch).
- Then the area connected by the front surface.
- Next is a fragment made according to scheme A.1.
- Central ornament: complex braid.
- Again, the part knitted according to scheme A.1.
As a transition to the front part, a strip of the “rice” pattern was used:
- Front row - 1 front, 1 wrong side.
- Wrong row - 1 front, 1 wrong side.
The front part contains the same set of patterns, but they should be placed symmetrically.
The pattern of knitting a poncho with knitting needles in areas at the beginning and at the end of the fabric (5 cm) is only the front loops. In other words, this is a garter stitch to make the same strap as on the sides of the parts.
Neck shaping
In the center of the canvas, an opening should be made that will serve as the neck. The height of the canvas before it begins and after completion should be very carefully calculated so that the two sections of the poncho are the same.
The neck is formed in several stages:
- Loops are immediately cut in a small area (about 8-10 cm).
- The next 5 cm on both sides of the formed opening cut one loop in the front rows. Details of the front and back are knitted here in turn.
- Then about 10 cm are knitted evenly.
- The next 5 cm should be added to the loops in the same way as before they were cut: one in each front row. You should get a bevel symmetrical on both sides.
- At the last stage, the same number of loops are obtained on the knitting needles, which was reduced first (in the first paragraph), the front and back webs are joined and the knitting of one large part continues.
The finished neck should be symmetrical. If this does not happen, the knitter should find the mistake and fix it.
How to make a collar
After the poncho was connected with knitting needles (the diagram and description can be any), a neckline should be made. It can be equipped with a neat strap or a high collar.
In any case, along the edge of the neck onto circular knitting needles, the number of loops calculated in advance is conveniently recruited. Next, they knit an elastic band (English, 1: 1 or 2: 2). The height of the plank is usually about 3-5 cm, the part should be made twice as high, so that later it can be turned up and sewn from the inside out.
A warm high neck is usually about 18 cm. This size allows you to fold it in half.

Knitting canvases is extremely simple, since you can use absolutely any pattern or even a simple surface.
Below is the poncho circuit used to make the model in the photo.
A combination of simple braids, a pattern of crossed loops and "cones" is made here with knitting needles. The result was a very successful version of an elegant and warm cape.
