OSAGO classes and their definition

The cost of CTP policies, although regulated by the Central Bank, is not the same for all drivers. There are so-called OSAGO classes that are assigned to car owners on the basis of several factors. The article describes in detail what the class of CTP insurance is: how to determine this indicator and what it affects.

osago classes

Accident-free discount

When extending the policy, insurers check whether there have been accidents in the past period. This is not done out of idle interest. If a person carefully drives a car and does not get into traffic accidents, he is entitled to a discount on car insurance services in the amount of up to 50%. That is, the cost of the policy is adjusted for a coefficient called bonus malus (KBM).

Why is the insurance company ready to pay extra for a neat driving? It is profitable for her. Let her lose part of her profit by making a discount, these expenses are less than if she had to pay compensation in the event of an accident. Therefore, car owners are encouraged to improve driving skills by providing a 5% discount for each year of driving "without adventure." This is a bonus. But for sloppy driving, leading to problems on the road and the cost of insurance compensation, malus fines are charged.

how to find out the OSAGO driver class

Previously, this magical coefficient was tied to a specific car, which was very inconvenient. Indeed, when selling a car, the car owner lost all the bonuses. Therefore, since 2008, the insurance history is associated with a person, not a vehicle.

Trouble-free, but not really

MTPL assumes liability insurance, not property insurance . Simply put, those cases in which the insured is not responsible for what happened do not affect the cost of the policy. Only accidents in which there was an insurance payment (if the policyholder became the culprit of the accident) are taken into account. The remaining accidents, which, for example, were registered according to the Euro protocol or were not recorded in any way by the traffic police, do not play a role.

If the car owner is not to blame for the accident, then his discounts will not go anywhere. As well as if it was to blame, but “no one saw anything,” and the participants agreed without notifying the traffic police.

Class CTP

Finally, we got to the very concept of " OSAGO classes ". This term is closely related to the bonus malus coefficient, which we examined above.

A special plate has been developed that regulates what kind of coefficient value is assigned under certain conditions. As can be seen from the first two columns, the KBM corresponds to a certain class.

The discount is calculated by deducting the unit from the coefficient and multiplying the result by 100%. For example, if the KBM is 0.85, then the discount will be:

(1 - 0.85) x 100% = -15%.

The class of CTP insurance depends not only on how often the car owner gets into an accident, but also on his driving experience.

What determines the class of CTP

A client who first applied for a policy receives a standard 3rd class with a value of 1. After that, his insurance history is written.

Each year that has passed without an accident will decrease the coefficient. That is, when renewing the policy, the 3rd grade will change to the 4th with a bonus malus of 0.95 and a 5% discount. If there were accidents, then the class, on the contrary, decreases, and the price of the policy increases.

OSAGO insurance class how to determine

How to find out your OSAGO class

Now that we’ve figured out the terms, it's time to figure out how to find out the class of the MTPL driver. In fact, to calculate the discount when issuing a policy, the insurance history of the car owner is required. Where is it stored?

If the car owner used the services of the same insurer, it is enough to contact your company. An employee will need only a few seconds to check the class of CTP in the internal database and determine the cost of renewing the policy.

If the driver decided to change the insurer, he will have to ask the previous “guardian” for help in form No. 4, which contains information about the emergency history. The document is provided within five days.

osago driver class

However, this certificate is not always needed. Most insurance companies use the PCA database and even provide their customers with the opportunity to independently calculate the cost of the policy on the basis of these data. Rarely, but it happens that the class is indicated in the policy.

Sometimes new companies default to a newcomer unit. You should not let this go on the brakes, because in this case the insurance history will be lost.

Find out your class yourself

It is possible to determine the class of compulsory motor liability insurance by yourself, without contacting the insurer. To do this, just use the above plate.

We already figured out the first two columns: these are classes and KBM. The remaining five columns indicate the number of insured events over the past year. 0 is the absence of an accident. Accordingly, 4+ indicates the presence of four or more accidents.

The values in the columns are also classes. For example, a novice driver, who received 3rd class and KMB 1 during the first policy, traveled for a year without an accident. In the line with the 3rd class, we see that with a zero number of accidents, the 4th class is assigned. If one accident occurred, then the 1st. Class 1 corresponds to a coefficient of 1.55. We consider:

(1.55 - 1) x 100% = 55%.

Therefore, the driver will pay 55% when renewing the policy. But this is not the worst situation. Now, if two or more accidents occur, then class M will be assigned, and it will take five years to get out of it and return to unity.

define a class of OSAGO

Each time when determining the price, the insurance agent is guided by that line of the table that corresponds to the current class of the driver.

But you can do without calculations by visiting the PCA website and instantly recognizing your KBM by entering the name and number of the driver’s license in a special form.

If there are several drivers

What if several car owners with different insurance classes are inscribed in the policy? How to determine the price of the policy in this case?

In this scenario, the calculation of the cost is made at maximum ratios. For example, three drivers are included in CTP: the first KBM is 0.6, the second 0.7, and the third 0.9. This means that a coefficient of 0.9 will be taken for the policy and the discount will be 10%.

If there are no restrictions on the number of drivers, then the bonus malus depends on whether insurance payments were made for the previous period of the contract.

About unscrupulous insurers and technical errors

A reasonable question arises: why does a car owner need information on how to find out the class of a MTPL driver if all the data has long been entered into a common database, and specially trained people who know how to calculate the price of a policy are sitting in insurance companies?

The problem is that these employees do not always have a clear conscience. And they can take advantage of the client’s ignorance to offer him a standard rate, thereby forcing them to overpay.

Even if the insurer does not intentionally change the class of the client, this may occur as a result of a technical malfunction or erroneous data entry.

define a class of OSAGO

If the CTP class in the policy for some reason changes, a new insurance history will begin - from the first class. And the driver's reputation will be re-formed.

That is why it is not recommended to purchase fake policies for the sake of economy. After all, when the car owner extends CTP, the driver's class is determined based on the history of his driving, and based on these data, the price is calculated. If there is no such story, all discounts will be burned.

How to save on CTP

The price of the policy is affected not only by OSAGO classes, but also by other factors. For example, territorial coefficients vary depending on the locality. Some cunning drivers draw up their car for a relative living in an area where the territorial coefficient is lower, and they themselves drive by general power of attorney.

It also matters who else is on the policy besides the owner of the car. Insurance without limitation of persons who can drive vehicles is much more expensive. And the inclusion in the policy of people who do not drive very well or just as long as they have a short driving experience is fraught with unnecessary costs.

check the osago class

Finally, if the car owner does not drive constantly, but, for example, only in the warm season, then it makes no sense to overpay for the whole year. It is enough to purchase a policy for several months.

Now we know what OSAGO classes are, why they are needed, and how to define them.
