History of the monument

The idea of erecting the monument belongs to the French historian de Laboulay, who 150 years ago proposed to give America a statue as a symbol of friendship between countries. The young sculptor Bartholdi, inspired by Delacroix's famous painting “Freedom Leading the People to the Barricades”, traveled to the United States to determine the location of the future monument.
