If you do not like complex types of needlework or just a beginner in the field of art, you will definitely like felt applications. It is not difficult to make them, but such souvenirs look bright and original.
Ideas and Options
Felt applications are made both in the form of simple objects, for example, a heart with a decor or a flower, and consisting of a large number of elements that make up the whole plot composition.
In this technique, you can do the following:
- magnet;
- brooch;
- pendant;
- a postcard;
- wallet;
- album cover;
- soft toy;
- pillow toy;
- decorative panel (flat or three-dimensional).
The list of options is not limited to these, of course. It all depends on your imagination.
Tools and materials
To make felt applications, you will need the following:
- Thin felt of different shades.
- Felt is thicker for making warp.
- Element Templates.
- Paper or cardboard for patterns (when performing complex objects).
- Pencil, eraser.
- Scissors.
- Glue (use a thermal gun well).
- Threads with a needle, for example, a floss (usually a contrasting shade to the color of the elements of the composition).
Appliques from felt: patterns
As a rule, simple shapes, often geometric shapes, are used for work , so you can draw templates using ordinary stationery stencils. If you need more complex contours, such as natural objects, use printed blanks.
With the help of such contour drawings, you can make different applications from felt. Patterns can consist not only of elements of a contour of a form. The following illustration shows a fish blank. The general outline of the object is formed from several separate parts, and not from one common as in the first diagram.
Similarly, you can do with templates from the first scheme, dividing a butterfly or heart into halves, and make a whole figure from separate parts for a sheep.
As a stencil-pattern, it is easy to use any photorealistic image (the first illustration in the text or in the next section). If the pattern is located frontally, and not from the side, then it is enough to print the picture in the right size and circle the contours of all the elements separately through the glass. It is also easy to do right from the screen, with the glass on top, so as not to damage the monitor.
DIY felt applications
Consider the technology on the example of making decor for interior decoration. Similarly, any composition will be performed and simpler in the form of a single flower or animal and the decor of a voluminous thing, for example, a pillow or soft toy. In the last two cases, the base will not consist of a single blank, but of two simple-shaped parts sewn and filled with synthetic winterizer or other materials.
To make a magnet in the form of a heart with flowers, as in the following illustration, work like this:
- Cut one (if you want to make the base flat) or two blanks in the shape of a heart. Choose the color of your choice, not necessarily black.
- Sew the blank with a buttonhole stitch. If you want to make a volumetric heart, you need to connect the two parts and sew them together using this seam, which in the first case plays only a decorative role. However, to obtain a volumetric heart, it is better to staple the parts after the application is completed. Inside (between the two parts) you will lay the synthetic winterizer, so if you do this right away, creating an application on the front side will be inconvenient.
- Put the remaining parts in layers according to the model. The stitches with which the elements are fixed are clearly visible in the photo. If desired, use beads for decoration, as shown in the picture.
How to make a panel
To perform a decorative panel, you need to work like this:
- So that you get beautiful applications from felt, take part templates ready. Print your favorite pattern or color illustration (photo below).
- Cut out all the necessary elements from paper.
- Lay out the details on sheets of felt of the appropriate color. Circle the contours, cut the workpieces.
- Prepare a light blue felt for the base (if you make a landscape similar to the one presented).
- Put a blue sky detail, light green earth and grass silhouette for the foreground on the background. Pin with pins and catch details.
- Sew on the seam on the front side along the perimeter of the background rectangle.
- Perform another stitch along the wavy edge of the blue part, the arc of the light green element and the carved side of the grass.
- Do the same with the sun and the crowns, and then the trunks of the trees.
- Sew the flowers manually, although if you don’t have a machine, all the seams can be done simply with a thread and a needle, however, this will be much longer. The flowers in the form of circles are easy to make from sequins, fixing them with a bead-center. Small parts can also be attached to glue.
- Place the panel in the frame. The easiest way is to glue the work on cardboard in a contrasting color (in this case black).

So, felt applications are made using simple technology, so even beginner needlewomen can make them. There are a lot of options for souvenirs that can be made in the form of bright applications.
