“Prepare a sled from the summer ...” says a popular saying, and in the language of knitters it means “think about the New Year’s decor in August.” As a rule, in winter, on the eve of the holiday, there are quite a few urgent matters: buying gifts, planning holidays, knitting warm sweaters and hats. There is no time to do cute decorative trifles here.
However, in the summer, when you don’t feel like loading your mind and hands with heavy projects, it's time to crochet Christmas napkins. Schemes and recommendations regarding the technology of their manufacture are proposed in this article.
Types of Christmas Napkins
The first association that arises when it comes to the celebration of Christmas and New Year is a specific symbolism: snowflakes, snowmen, Santa Claus. Under the influence of Western culture, we are increasingly using characteristic colors that symbolize the Christmas tree, snow and Santa Claus costume: a combination of green, white and red.
All these features should be considered for those who plan to crochet Christmas napkins. Schemes can be used ready-made or made independently, based on those that are available.
Based on the appearance, shape and complexity of the products, they can be divided into:
- Simple rectangular napkins.
- Openwork made in a characteristic color scheme.
- Napkins with a complex configuration (images of gnomes, Christmas trees, deer and gift socks).
The latter category can only be done by experienced craftswomen, and this article is intended more for beginners, therefore, we will further consider crochet Christmas napkins (the schemes with a description are attached) of the first two types.
Rectangular Napkin
This type of decor is extremely simple to use. To make it, you will need green yarn and narrow satin ribbons of white and red. The thickness of the yarn and its composition do not matter.
Crochet such Christmas napkins (patterns are not required for them) begin to knit from a chain of air loops (VP). Its length (this will be the width of the napkin) is calculated by measuring the control sample.
As an example, let's take 80 VP. Further knitting is performed according to this algorithm:
- 3 VP lifting, 3 double crochet (CCH), * 2, 4 * (repeat 11 times), 2, 3.
- The second and subsequent rows to perform according to the drawing.
- Work is stopped when the napkin takes a square shape.
- All four sides need to be tied with an RLS, then with a crab step.
Tapes of different colors should be threaded into the holes of the canvas. Bows are made separately and fastened with a glue gun or sewn.
If desired, the craftswoman can also tie a napkin holder (a strip of linen sewn from the end) and round or square cup holders.
Round Christmas crochet napkins: snowflake patterns
To get holiday cup holders or larger products with a thematic coloring, it is enough to correctly distribute the colors when knitting a regular round napkin.
In the photo above, the combination of red, green and white colors is clearly visible. Thanks to this distribution, almost any pattern will become suitable for knitting New Year's decor. For example, a snowflake in the bottom row of the next pattern.
The flower formed by the first row should be made with red thread. The next row is green, then five rows are white yarn and the last is again green.
Extremely popular are napkins connected in the form of snowflakes. This is a universal winter symbol that will suit even the most ardent opponents of Western influence on culture. Such products can be laid on a table, attached to gifts, and also hung on the ceiling or on a Christmas tree.
Hanging Decor Processing
A snowflake is probably the most interesting product that allows you to embody crochet. Schemes and description (Christmas napkins, Christmas tree decorations, window decor fit simply) do not differ in complexity. It is most important to observe the high density of the product, otherwise weak loops will be noticeable and spoil the whole look.
If you plan to hang a snowflake on a fishing line or thread, it should be stiff and perfectly flat. To achieve this effect, it is laid out on a flat surface, steamed with an iron and soaked in a solution of starch, sugar or PVA glue. The dried product perfectly fulfills its functions for a long time.
