Perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions of all regarding any problems in the operation of computer technology can be called this: "Computer slows down. What should I do?" Unfortunately, there is no universal answer to each specific case and simply cannot be, because every time, understanding the problem, the specialist will find all new reasons, even those that he has not encountered before.
And this is understandable: a computer hangs for a variety of reasons, different operating systems can be installed on different machines, and in different versions, there is no completely identical package of installed programs on two different computers, even if they are in the same office, it naturally differs and the hardware used on the machines, and even the packages of installed drivers are completely the most “mismatched”. That is, any system is unique, therefore, in a nutshell, fully and unequivocally answer the “cry of the soul” of the user “Computer slows down What to do?” simply impossible.
But still there are a number of “standard” for Windows OS reasons for which the computer slows down. What to do in this case, too, is, in principle, known, so we will now discuss this issue in sufficient detail.
For Windows to work, it is necessary that there is enough free space in the partition where the operating system is installed (usually it is a C :) drive. The thing is that the OS uses free hard disk space for work as virtual memory, in contrast to physical memory. The less space on the hard disk for virtual memory, the slower the OS is running, until the computer freezes.
What to do if the computer crashes precisely for this reason? First, certain steps must be taken to get the computer working again. Usually, a forced reboot of the operating system is done by pressing the Reset button on the case. Or on a laptop, press and hold the power button for a long time. After successfully starting the operating system, you need to clear the space on the system partition of the disk by deleting old unnecessary files. As a rule, these can be temporary files in the Temp folder, the Recycle Bin can be full, you can delete unnecessary programs for cleaning, and often the files on the computer desktop take up a lot of space. It is better to transfer the necessary files to other sections of the hard drive or save them to external media. After cleaning, the system will probably start working faster.
If the computer hangs and after cleaning the hard drive, then you can clean the system registry. The fact is that in the process of constantly installing and uninstalling programs in the registry, many “tails” accumulate that remain from different programs. Often there are so many of these “stretching tails” that they begin to significantly slow down the system. This problem can also be dealt with. But you can only clean the registry yourself if you know well what you are doing. Understand all the really existing keys and parameters, because if something is done wrong, then you can say goodbye to the system - a complete radical reinstallation is required.
In Windows, there is such a definitely useful feature called startup. This means that there is a whole list of programs that run at the same time as the OS boots. Often programs get to this list “as they wish”, that is, during their installation. The more programs that are running and running in the background, the more brakes there are for the system. The startup list can be edited by removing from it those programs that can be started manually later when they are needed. Often there are a lot of such applications. Leave in the startup list only those that should start immediately with the OS, for example, an antivirus.
But if the computer still slows down, what should I do? If any of the measures taken do not help, there remains a completely radical tool called reinstalling the system. If the reinstallation is performed with the formatting of the system partition, then after that the computer will, as they say, “fly”. But before this radical action, you must take care to save user data, and the entire package of the necessary applications will need to be reinstalled.
But the phrase “the computer is frozen” can be forgotten. Until next time ...
