After downloading the file in NRG format, you probably want to open it. But what if the necessary program is not on your computer? You will find the answer in this article. A detailed description of the NRG format will be given here, as well as the programs that work with this extension. Armed with such knowledge, you can easily cope with the task.
Description
NRG files are images created in Nero Burning Room. They can be either an exact copy of the disc, or contain data prepared for subsequent recording. At the same time, the user, having the appropriate software, can easily first make any changes to the image, and only then proceed with burning.
In addition, this format is characterized by a high write speed to optical media. Largely because of this feature, the NRG extension has become widespread among PC users. However, in terms of popularity, it still does not reach the same ISO.
It is also worth noting that the NRG format can be opened on any operating system. Simply put, you can easily work with these images on Windows, Linux, or Mac OS.
How to open?
As mentioned earlier, the NRG format is “native” to the Nero program. Therefore, it is logical to use this particular utility to work with this extension. It is done like this:
- Download and install the Nero application package on your computer.
- Launch the Nero Burning Rom utility.
- The program will prompt you to create a new project. Refuse this by clicking the “Cancel” button.
- Now open the “Recorder” tab and select the option “Burn image”.
- Click "Open" and specify the path to your file in NRG format.
- Now you can view the contents of the image and, if necessary, burn it to disk.
The disadvantage of this method is that all programs from the Nero package are distributed on a paid basis. However, there is a 14-day trial period that you can easily take advantage of.
Alternatives
Almost any program for working with disk images can open a file with the NRG extension. If one of them is already installed on your computer, then there is no need to additionally download Nero as well. Here are examples of utilities that work perfectly with the NRG format:
- UltraISO;
- PowerISO
- DAEMON Tools;
- Roxio Popcorn (for Mac OS).
The list can go on for a very long time, so it’s easier to try to open the NRG file in your program. If this does not work out for you, then you should already think about installing one of the utilities mentioned above.
In addition, almost all archivers work with the NRG extension. So, you can use WinRAR, 7zip and any other similar program to open these files. This is done in exactly the same way as if the NRG format was a regular archive.
